Har Gobind Khorana Born: Major discipline: Organic chemistry Died: Minor discipline:
Har Gobind Khorana shared the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Robert W. Holley and Marshall W. Nirenberg "for their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis." Khorana's birth date is recorded as January 9, 1922 in Raipur, India, now part of Pakistan. The son of a village agricultural taxation clerk, Khorana and his family were poor. Yet, because Khorana's parents made school a priority for their children, he was able to continue his education at Punjab University in Lahore, India, where he earned a B.Sc. with honors in 1943 and an M.Sc. with honors in 1945. He then received a Government of India Fellowship that gave him the opportunity to study at the University of Liverpool, England. He earned a Ph.D. degree in 1948 under Roger J. S. Beer. In the following year, he carried out postdoctoral research with Vladimir Prelog at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. From 1950-1952, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Cambridge University, working with Alexander Todd and G. W. Kenner. Here he began his work on proteins and nuclei acids.

Ann Holley Los Gatos resident Ann Dworkin Holley died Feb. 17 of cancer at the age of 70. Born April 29, 1925, in New York City, Holley received both a bachelor's and master's degree in chemistry from Cornell University. She met her late husband Robert W. Holley at Cornell, with whom she worked in the lab and published several papers. Following her son's birth, Holley taught mathematics at Ithaca High School for 10 years, until her husband took a position at the Salk Institute. The family moved to La Jolla in 1968, the year Robert received the Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology. Holley earned a second master's degree, this time in mathematics, from San Diego State University. She later joined the faculty there and also taught at Mesa and Evening Colleges and in high-school honors programs. The Holleys moved to Los Gatos in 1989 to be near their grandchildren. Holley supported many humanitarian and liberal causes. Following her retirement, she campaigned for the League of Women Voters on children's issues and worked on the Los Gatos parcel-tax campaign. She loved teaching and music. Survivors include son Dr. Frederick Owen Holley, daughter-in-law Maud Gleason; and grandchildren Elizabeth and Robert Holley, all of Los Gatos.

ISSN 0009-2347 THE CHEMICAL SIDE OF THE DOUBLE HELIX
The double helix has played a role in chemical research in the past 50 years, inspiring chemists to solve biological problems CELIA M. HENRY T he double helix. That two-word phrase is so firmly planted in our scientific lexicon that even a good number of nonscientists recognize the reference to the structure of DNA. Many of us can't remember a time when DNA wasn't recognized as being the genetic material or as taking the form of two hydro gen-bonding complementary strands of base-pairing nucleotides wound around a single axis. MODEL COMPOUND Watson (left) and Crick pose with their model of DNA in 1953.
A. BARRINGTON BROWN/PHOTO RESEARCHERS INC.
Although the B-form DNA structure that James D. Watson and Francis H. C. Crick proposed in their April 25, 1953, letter to Nature made only a limited splash at the time, the subsequent ripples revolutionized biologyparticularly geneticsturning it into a molecular science. People pretty much agree about the impact that the double helix has had on biology, but what about chemistry? How have chemists been inspired by this structure? For one, Watson and Crick's model for DNA structure demonstrated that chemists could play a role in solving biological problems.
