Hans Adolf Krebs – Biography
Sir Hans Adolf Krebs was born at Hildesheim, Germany, on August 25th, 1900. He is the son of Georg Krebs, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat surgeon of that city, and his wife Alma, née Davidson.
Krebs was educated at the Gymnasium Andreanum at Hildesheim and between the years 1918 and 1923 he studied medicine at the Universities of Göttingen, Freiburg-im-Breisgau , and Berlin. After one year at the Third Medical Clinic of the University of Berlin he took, in 1925, his M.D. degree at the University of Hamburg and then spent one year studying chemistry at Berlin. In 1926 he was appointed Assistant to Professor Otto Warburg at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology at Berlin-Dahlem, where he remained until 1930.
In I930, he returned to hospital work, first at the Municipal Hospital at Altona under Professor L. Lichtwitz and later at the Medical Clinic of the University of Freiburg-im-Breisgau under Professor S. J. Thannhauser.
In June 1933, the National Socialist Government terminated his appointment and he went, at the invitation of

I would like to thank the nominating committee and the British Biochemical Society for the invitation to give the Hopkins Memorial Medal Lecture. It has always been a delight to return to the United Kingdom, ever since I spent 2 wonderful years as a Fulbright Fellow at Oxford. Also, it is always a delight to see the many former students and postdoctoral fellows who made major contributions to the research in my laboratory and who have now become my colleagues and friends. At the same time, I feel humbled by the invitation, as I think most recipients of the Hopkins Medal probably are, because of the towering achievements of Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins. As most of you know, he isolated tryptophan in 1901; he established the concept of essential amino acids in 1906; he demonstrated the role of lactic acid in muscle metabolism in 1907; and he isolated glutathione in 1921 [ ]. His last publication appeared in the year of his death at the age of 86. In addition, he was the father of British biochemistry in that he was primarily responsible for introducing biochemistry as a scientific discipline within British universities. Clearly, he began with the conviction that understanding the chemistry of molecules would explain the mysteries of biology, and he developed a beautifully planned career on the basis of this conviction.

French mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal in 1994 for his work since the 1980's on partial differential equations. The sources of such equations are many - for example, physical, probalistic or geometric and other diverse subareas - each studying different phenomena for different nonlinear partial differential equations by utterly different methods. Pierre-Louis Lions has been called unique in his ability to transcend these boundaries and to solve pressing problems throughout the field. Aaron Klug Born 11 Aug 1926
