  • Carter warns of "uncontrollable violence" In his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, former President Jimmy Carter blasts the idea of a preemptive war with Iraq. By Jimmy Carter Your Majesties, Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I accept this prize. I am grateful to my wife Rosalynn, to my colleagues at The Carter Center, and to many others who continue to seek an end to violence and suffering throughout the world. The scope and character of our Center's activities are perhaps unique, but in many other ways they are typical of the work being done by many hundreds of nongovernmental organizations that strive for human rights and peace. Most Nobel laureates have carried out our work in safety, but there are others who have acted with great personal courage. None has provided more vivid reminders of the dangers of peacemaking than two of my friends, Anwar Sadat and Yitzhak Rabin, who gave their lives for the cause of peace in the Middle East.

UN, Kofi Annan Win Nobel Peace Prize
The United Nations and its Secretary-General Kofi Annan were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday 12 October 2001 for ``their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.'' UN spokesman Fred Eckhard woke Annan and told him the news shortly after 5 am Friday morning. ``Since the end of the cold war, the UN has been able to move toward its full potential in the peace and security area,'' Eckhard said.
    Nobel Peace Prize citation
``The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001, in two equal portions, to the United Nations and to its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, for their work for a better organised and more peaceful world. For one hundred years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to strengthen organised cooperation between states. The end of the Cold War has at last made it possible for the UN to perform more fully the part it was originally intended to play. Today the organisation is at the forefront of efforts to achieve peace and security in the world, and of the international mobilisation aimed at meeting the world's economic, social and environmental challenges. Kofi Annan has devoted almost his entire working life to the UN As Secretary-General, he has been preeminent in bringing new life to the organisation.

    (shown above)
The Clay County Courthouse is one of the oldest courthouses in the state of Tennessee to be used for holding court. All the original records from the beginnings of the court system to the present are housed in the courthouse. The courthouse was built as a part of the contract system in 1872 to build the public buildings for the new county seat, Celina. Completed on October 1, 1873, the courthouse was built by D. L. Dow of Cookeville at a cost of $9999. The bricks for the courthouse were made from the clay dirt taken from the public square, and the lumber was dressed by hand. In 1985 4-H club members removed the plaster from one of the original fireplaces and installed a poplar mantle so that the interior of the courtroom would resemble the original. The Clay County Courthouse is listed with the National Registry of Historical Buildings.
Cordell Hull Law Office The Cordell Hull Law office has been moved many times, and changed from a three-room building to two. With the help of the State of Tennessee and Museum Committee, the building will be moved to a permanent location next to the museum on Brown Street. Plans for complete restoration have not been finalized. Milton C.Sidwell used the building in conjunction with Hull during the early years of Hull's practice. Cordell Hull used the building as a law office in 1891. Hull was elected special judge by the Clay County Bar, then elected judge in April 1903. He was then appointed judge by Governor Frazier, and elected to the same position in August of the same year. He pursued a political move in 1892.

    Nobel Peace Prize
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel Prizes bequested by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel . Four of the five prizes are awarded in Stockholm each year, but Nobel had stipulated in his will that the Peace Prize could not be awarded in Sweden. Instead the Norwegian capital of Oslo was chosen as the award site and a Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee is appointed to select the laureate for the Peace Prize. According to the will of Alfred Nobel the prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

    The Nobel prizes
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made. In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.
