Ask Aristotle about John Hume

Andrew Roth
Friday March 16, 2001
It was a telling irony that an ailing John Hume should have to give up his most recent job first - his seat in the new Northern Ireland assembly ought to have been the pinnacle of the achievement which earned him the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize. But his poor health has seen this job go while he retains his better paid but less demanding posts at Westminster and in the European parliament. Even before his health sagged, Mr Hume had always wielded a broad brush, like a Renaissance painter leaving the filling in of details to his apprentices. In his case this has been his overworked deputy, Seamus Mallon, who was also saddled with the job of deputy leader of the assembly, having to work with its chilly unionist leader, David Trimble.

October 16, 1998
Elizabeth Farnsworth talks with the head of the Northern Ireland peace negotiations Senator George Mitchell , following a look at the relationship between the co-winners of the Nobel Peace Prize John Hume and David Trimble.
ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The Nobel Peace Prize story begins with background on the two Northern - the two politicians from Northern Ireland who shared the prize. John Hume is the leader of the largest Catholic-based party, the Social Democratic Labor Party, and David Trimble heads the largest Protestant-based party, the Unionists. He now holds the highest office in the province, First Minister. We have a report from Terry Lloyd of Independent Television News. TERRY LLOYD, ITN: Once they were deeply divided, separated by politics and bitterness, but John Hume and David Trimble came together at a pop concert given by the Band U2. The leader of the mainly Catholic SDLP came to the political forefront in the civil rights movement in the late 1960's. JOHN HUME: The civil rights movement is an absolutely tenured movement, seeking justice for all.

  • Peace: John Hume and David Trimble (both Northern Ireland), whose efforts made possible Northern Ireland's Good Friday peace accord in 1998 and have led to political progress in a deep-rooted conflict. Hume is the leader of the Catholic Social Democratic and Labor Party, and Trimble heads the predominant Protestant Ulster Unionist Party. Literature: Physics: Daniel C. Tsui Chemistry: Walter Kohn (U.S.) and John A. Pople (U.K.) for their developments in the study of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved. Kohn's density-functional theory simplifies the mathematical explanation of the bonding between atoms within molecules, making it possible for scientists to study large, complex molecules. Pople was cited for his development of computer techniques that make it possible to create models of chemical reactions that cannot otherwise be recreated in the laboratory. Medicine: Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro, and Ferid Murad (all U.S.) for discovering that nitric oxide acts as a signal in the cardiovascular system. Their findings are relevant to the function of the recently popular anti-impotence drug Viagra, and will also have implications for the treatment of heart disease, shock, and other medical conditions.
