in Medicine visited Buenos Aires
Louis Ignarro, M.D Sponsored by Laboratorios Bagó, Dr. Louis Ignarro, who was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize for discovering nitric oxide or NO (search for the on line site of the journal The 1998 Nobel Prize), has recently been in Buenos Aires. This is his second visit to our city. He came from Montevideo, Uruguay, where he visited Professor Rafael Radi's Laboratory.
During his tight agenda, Ignarro participated in numerous social and scientific activities. Among the latter, he visited Dr. Juan Poderoso's Laboratory where an intense research in NO is under way.
He also held a conference at the Medical School of Buenos Aires University. The following is its summary:
Nitric Oxide: The history of NO goes back to 1000 years BC, when some civilizations applied calcium nitrate to meat for its better preservation.
In 1790, Priestley described the NO-iron complexes.

    Louis J. Ignarro was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1941. He received a B.Sc. in Chemistry and Pharmacy from Columbia University in 1962, a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Minnesota in 1966, and postdoctoral training in the Laboratory of Chemical Pharmacology at the NIH in 1966-1968. He had a research position with Ciba-Geigy from 1968 to 1972, an academic position in the Department of Pharmacology at Tulane University School of Medicine from 1973 to 1985, and an academic position in the Department of Pharmacology at UCLA School of Medicine since 1985. He was awarded a PhRMA Foundation (formerly PMA) Research Starter Grant in 1973 during his research years at Tulane University. He currently holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology at UCLA. Dr. Ignarro has been interested in signal transduction mechanisms involving cyclic GMP and nitric oxide for most of his career. He has published over 500 articles and has trained numerous graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows during his academic career. His research contributions include: elucidation of the mechanism of action of nitroglycerin, discovery that nitric oxide relaxes smooth muscle and inhibits platelet function, introduction of S-nitrosothiols into biology, discovery that EDRF is nitric oxide, and discovery that nitric oxide is the neurotransmitter that promotes erectile function. The latter finding led to the development of ViagraR.

29 January 2003 Forty-one American Nobel laureates have signed a declaration opposing war with Iraq. The declaration was organised by Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon. The signatories include 19 winners of the physics prize. The declaration reads: "The undersigned oppose a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support. Military operations against Iraq may indeed lead to a relatively swift victory in the short term. But war is characterized by surprise, human loss and unintended consequences. Even with a victory, we believe that the medical, economic, environmental, moral, spiritual, political and legal consequences of an American preventive attack on Iraq would undermine, not protect, US security and standing in the world." The signatories include Norman Ramsey, who worked on the Manhattan Project, and Charles Townes, a former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon. Townes was also chairman of a federal panel that studied nuclear warheads.

Summary
Nitric oxide (NO) is a gas that transmits signals in the organism. Signal transmission by a gas that is produced by one cell, penetrates through membranes and regulates the function of another cell represents an entirely new principle for signalling in biological systems. The discoverers of NO as a signal molecule are awarded this year's Nobel Prize.

Three win Nobel for nitric oxide finds
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Three American researchers won the Nobel Medicine Prize on Monday for discovering new properties of nitric oxide, which is key to the anti-impotence drug Viagra and has other applications ranging from treating heart disease to shock. The prestigious prize went to Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad. Furchgott is a pharmacologist at the State University of New York in Brooklyn, Ignarro is at University of California-Los Angeles and Murad is at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. The $978,000 prize is divided equally among the three winners.

Robert F. Furchgott, Ph.D., one of three scientists to receive the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, was a member of the School of Medicine faculty more than 40 years ago. Formal presentation of the awards will take place Dec. 10 in Stockholm, Sweden. Furchgott, a pharmacologist at the State University of New York (SUNY), and two other Americans, Ferid Murad, M.D., and Louis J. Ignarro, Ph.D., received the prize earlier this month for their work concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. Furchgott came to the medical school in 1949 to work in the laboratory of world-renowned researcher Oliver H. Lowry, M.D., Ph.D., who was professor and head of the Department of Pharmacology. Furchgott previously had been an assistant professor of biochemistry at Cornell University. He joined the pharmacology department here as an assistant professor and was one of six faculty members in the 1950s. He was promoted to associate professor in 1952. He studied the effects of drugs on heart rate and rhythm, and, in particular, the action of drugs on the smooth muscle of blood vessels. F. Edmund Hunter, Jr., Ph.D., professor emeritus of pharmacology, recalled that Furchgott, now 82, was one of Lowry's first recruits after being named head of pharmacology.

The researchers worked independently and are the first to show that a gas can act as a signaling molecule. They will share the $978,000 prize. Murad in 1977 observed that some drugs, such as nitroglycerin, caused the release of nitric oxide (NO) in the body. Three years later, Furchgott's work indicated that acetylcholine and several other hormones caused the release of a molecule that made blood vessels dilate (become more open). Then in 1986 Ignarro contributed the final puzzle piece that the mystery molecule doing the signaling was indeed nitric oxide.

Alfred Nobel selv led for øvrig av koronar hjertesykdom, men nektet å ta glyserylnitrat da han kjente til den medfølgende hodepinen etter mange års arbeid med dette stoffet. Han kunne ikke tro at glyserylnitrat kunne ha noen positive effekter mot brystsmerter. I fysiologiske konsentrasjoner har NO en rekke funksjoner. I hjertet og blodkar fører økte konsentrasjoner av NO til økt aktvitet av den cGMP-avhengige proteinkinasen med redusert blodtrykk som følge. Nitrogen monoksid er ustabilt og nedbrytes i løpet av sekunder. Dette drar man nytte av når man benytter NO som inhalasjonsterapi ved akutt lungesviktsyndrom (acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)). Den korte levetiden gjør at NO i hovedsak har en lokal effekt i lungene. Effekten av NO på blodkar er også av betydning for ereksjonen siden NO som blir frigjort fra nerver i penis, forårsaker økt blodtilførsel. Sildenafil (Viagra) utøver sin effekt ved å hemme nedbrytningen av cGMP. Videre er det vist at NO har sentralnervøse effekter.

Stanford Report, October 3, 2001 Other Nobel connections to the Farm
Eric A. Cornell and Carl E. Wieman shared the 2001 physics prize with Wolfgang Ketterle "for creating Bose-Einstein condensation using laser cooling and evaporation techniques." Cornell, a senior scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and professor adjoint at the University of Colorado-Boulder, received his bachelor’s degree in physics from Stanford in 1985. Wieman, a physics professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder, received his doctorate from Stanford in 1977. K. Barry Sharpless , chemistry (2001), earned a Stanford degree: Ph.D. '68 in chemistry. The Scripps Research Institute professor was cited "for his work on chirally catalysed oxidation reactions." Herbert L. Abrams , professor emeritus of radiology, is co-founder (1980) and member of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War; the organization won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985.
