53. Nobel E-Museum
Short biography of the man behind the nobel Prizes. Includes portraits.
http://www.nobel.se/nobel/alfred-nobel/index.html
Alfred Nobel was born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden to a family of engineers. His family was descended from Olof Rudbeck, the best-known technical genius of Sweden's 17th century era as a great power in northern Europe. At age 9, he moved with his family to Russia where he and his brothers were given first class education in the humanities and natural sciences by private teachers.
Nobel invented dynamite in 1866 and later built up companies and laboratories in more than 20 countries all over the world. A holder of more than 350 patents, he also wrote poetry and drama and even seriously considered becoming a writer. The idea of giving away his fortune was no passing fancy for Nobel. Efforts to promote peace were close to his heart and he derived intellectual pleasure from literature, while science built the foundation for his own activities as a technological researcher and inventor.
On November 27, 1895, Nobel signed his final will and testament at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris. He died of a cerebral haemorrhage in his home in San Remo, Italy on December 10, 1896.

  • Joseph Stiglitz NEW YORK (CNNmoney) - The 2001 Nobel prize for economics was awarded Wednesday to three American professors, whose work on the business impact of asymmetric information laid the foundation for a theory of markets used today. The theory of asymmetric information looks at the disparate levels of knowledge - perhaps about a product or service that necessarily separates, say, a vendor and a buyer - and how this disparity effects their transaction and the process. "An example might be, when the owner of the firm knows more than the shareholders," Joseph Stiglitz , professor of economics, business and international affairs at Columbia University, and one of the three recipients, told CNNfn. Joseph Stiglitz "So the theory asks, how can shareholders ascertain what the firm's real prospects are when they have less information," Stiglitz asked. "It's a pervasive aspect of modern economies."

The Einstein X-ray Observatory October 8, 2002 :: The Chandra team was thrilled by the news that Riccardo Giacconi will be a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2002 "for pioneering contributions to astrophysics, which have led to the discovery of cosmic X-ray sources."
Giacconi's vision, intellect, and ability to inspire others led directly to the Chandra X-ray Observatory and to the legions of X-ray astronomers who now explore the high-energy universe. Justly called "the father of X-ray astronomy," Giacconi and his team discovered the first cosmic X-ray source in 1962, then proposed, designed and directed NASA's Uhuru X-ray satellite which found the first evidence for a black hole. The Einstein X-ray Observatory, the first imaging X-ray telescope, was also a product of Giacconi's team. Recent Headlines Feb 12 Choosing Chandra Targets

A strategy for the well-informed William F. Sharpe has received international acclaim, culminating in the Nobel Prize in economic science, for his work on asset markets. If there were an easy way to get in and out of the market ("time the market") for profit, he'd know it. If there were an easy way to pick stocks and get high returns, he'd know that. So what does he do with his own money? Consider what Sharpe told an interviewer from the educational publication Q: Do you invest your own money in broadly diversified stock index funds? A: I certainly do. Q: Do you try to pick individual stocks or time the market? A: No. I invest in various funds covering bonds, large stocks, small stocks and international stocks. (Source: Interview with William F. Sharpe in Classrooms and Lunchrooms, Spring 1992.) The more you know about asset markets, the more you'll appreciate the strengths of "buy and hold index funds" as a long-term investment strategy. Go back to The Key The more you
