Nobel Assembly Statement

Don Hogan Charles/ The New York Times Dr. Eric R. Kandel of New York is also one of the three recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
hree scientists who have made important contributions to understanding the long-term changes in the brain that underlie memory and mood were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine yesterday. Dr. Arvid Carlsson of the University of Gothenberg in Sweden and two New Yorkers, Dr. Eric R. Kandel of Columbia University and Dr. Paul Greengard of Rockefeller University, will share prize money of nine million Swedish crowns, or $914,700. Dr. Carlsson, 77, discovered that dopamine was an important chemical signal in the region of the brain that controls movement, a discovery that laid the basis for finding that the agent is depleted in patients with Parkinson's and that the disease could be treated with the drug L- dopa. Dr. Kandel, 70, has worked to understand the changes that take place in brain cells when memories are formed. Dr. Greengard, 74, has focused on unraveling the intricate cascade of events that occurs inside a neuron after a signal is received.

Front Page Previous Story Next Story NIH Grantees, Alumni Awarded Nobel Prizes Of the 13 Nobel Prizes in six categories awarded for the year 2000, four were won by NIH grantees, bringing the total number of Nobel laureates funded by NIH to 102 since the honors began in 1901. Dr. Ruth Kirschstein, NIH acting director, congratulated the medicine laureates and said, "This work is very important in understanding how the more than hundred billion nerve cells in the brain communicate. I am proud that NIH has provided long-term and consistent support to these fine scientists over decades." The National Institute of Mental Health has provided more than 30 years of research support to Kandel and Greengard. Support has also been provided by NINDS, NIA, NIAAA, NIDA, NIGMS and NHLBI. Kandel received the prize for his elucidating research on the functional modification of synapses in the brain. Initially using the sea slug as an experimental model but later working with mice, he has established that the formation of memories is a consequence of short and long-term changes in the biochemistry of nerve cells. Greengard, who spent 1958-1959 in the Laboratory of Clinical Biochemistry, NHI, under the late Dr. Sidney Udenfriend, was recognized for his discovery that dopamine and a number of other transmitters can alter the functional state of neuronal proteins.

Title: Principles of Neural Science Author:
Eric R. Kandel James H. Schwartz Thomas M. Jessell Format: Hardcover Pub. Date: 05 January, 2000 Publisher: ISBN: Book Review Customer Reviews (from Amazon.com) Review #1 Ranking 5 I read this book in medical school. Although I would agree that it is probably to basic science oriented for a medical school neuroscience course, it was enjoyable, thorough, and inspirational. There are few books in my life that took as complex a topic as how the brain works and made it comprehensible. It is not a crib sheet for passing medical school exams. It is the first book I would recommend for anyone seriously interested in an understanding of the brain, sensory processes, etc... For anyone for whom a fundamental grounding in neuroscience is important this is the book. Review #2 Ranking 4 Review #3 Ranking 5 In my undergraduate neural science class we used the essentials of neural science - an abridged version of this text. The shortened version provides plenty of information for an undergraduate level course and perhaps even for medical school. In medical school, however, I used this text, The Principles, and was pleasantly surprised that was no more difficult to follow that the "simplified" version that I had used previously. I really enjoy this book and plan to use it for many years as a reference. It is truly unfortunate, however, that Prof. Ron Calabrese did not have the opportunity to infuse this text with a little of his own personal flavor!

Nobel Laureate to Present Gladstone Distinguished Lecture
Photo: Christopher Denney for HHMI Nobel laureate Eric R. Kandel a winner of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will present the Gladstone Distinguished Lecture in Neuroscience on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 4 p.m., at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center, Carr Auditorium, in Building 3. The title of his lecture is "Genes, Memory Storage, and the Search for New Types of Synaptic Actions." He has made seminal contributions to the field of neurobiology. His research has focused on the molecular mechanisms of the long-term synaptic changes related to learning in both invertebrates and mammals in the Aplysia nervous system and hippocampus. Recent work has focused on the molecular switch that converts short-term to long-term memory and on how long-term memory can be restricted to specific synapses. Kandel is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the National Science Academies of Germany and France. In addition to the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, he has won the Lasker Award, the Gairdner Award, the Harvey Prize, and the National Medal of Science.

The 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine The Committee honors important research in signal transduction in the nervous system The Nobel Foundation recently announced its winner for the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. The prestigious honor goes this year to two Americans and a scientist from Sweeden independently made pioneering discoveries concerning second-messenger-mediated signal transduction between nerve cells. The Prize Recipients Arvid Carlsson
Department of Pharmacology, University of Gothenburg

Arvid Carlsson is being honored for for his discovery that dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain and that it has great importance for regulating movement. His work was a necessary precursor to our understanding of the role that dopamine plays in disease such as Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. Paul Greengard
Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Science, Rockefeller University, New York

Paul Greengard is being honored for his discovery of the intracellular signaling pathways that mediate the postsynaptic effects of dopamine other related neurotransmitters that function via second messenger systems. His work identified key proteins that mediate this process and the importance of phosphorylation states for its regulation. Eric R. Kandel

Annual Neuroscience Retreat
The annual Neurosciences Retreat was held on Saturday, October 5. Student organizers did a terrific job of setting up and coordinating the event, which included scientific talks, the 2nd Annual Weakest Link Neurosciences game, and plenty of time for conversation and camaraderie. Scientific talks led the program, featuring student speakers, Colin Zappone, Brian Hawkins, and faculty speakers, Lee Ryan, Velma Dobson, and Konrad Zinsmaier. These short talks gave attendees a short look at the work of fellow neuroscientists. The highlight of the afternoon was the Weakest Link Neurosciences Dinner was a delicious and plentiful buffet of Thai food. An impromptu concert by students and the cool and serene atmosphere of Madera Canyon were a perfect combination to end the day. Another great retreat! Photo album
