Cell and Molecular Biological Studies of Memory Storage
Eric R. Kandel, M.D.
Senior Investigator,
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Biography... CREB is required for explicit memory of space...
New imaging techniques visualize the physiology of the living brain... Summary: Eric Kandel's lab is studying examples of the major forms of memory storage. The lab is studying explicit memory storage (the conscious recall of information about people, places, and objects) in mice and implicit memory storage (the unconscious recall of perceptual and motor skills) in the snail Aplysia . In Aplysia , the lab has focused on the implicit memory for sensitization, a simple form of learned fear, and the mechanisms for achieving synapse-specific anatomical changes. In mice, they have examined the synaptic mechanisms contributing to memory for space, a complex form of explicit memory storage. Cognitive psychological studies in patients with brain lesions and normal subjects indicate that there are two distinct types of memory storage: the conscious recall of information about people, places, and things (explicit memory), and the unconscious use of information about motor skills and perceptual strategies (implicit memory).

NIH Grantees Awarded Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for Brain Research Long-time National Institutes of Health grantees Dr. Eric R. Kandel and Dr. Paul Greengard were awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries in signal transduction in the nervous system. Together their work has improved treatments for Parkinson's Disease, schizophrenia, depression and holds promise for the improvement of memory in various types of dementia. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden announced the prizes this morning. Dr. Kandel of the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior at Columbia University in New York, and Dr. Greengard of the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Science at Rockefeller University in New York received the award jointly with Dr. Arvid Carlsson of the University of Gothenburg. Dr. Ruth Kirschstein, Principal Deputy Director of the National Institutes of Health, congratulated the scientists and said, "This work is very important in understanding how the more than hundred billion nerve cells in the brain communicate. I am proud that NIH has provided long-term and consistent support, to these fine scientists over decades. I would add that because of the breadth and depth of his research, Dr. Eric Kandel was a valued advisor to the NIH Director from 1995 through 1999." The National Institute of Mental Health has provided over thirty years of research support to Drs. Kandel and Greengard. Support has also been provided by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institute on Aging, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Campus Jussieu, amphi 56 A.

Everything but the kitchen sink:
The White House has helpfully provided a document to bolster its case for going after Iraq. Called A Decade of Deception and Defiance , one of its chapters is Saddam Hussein's Refusal to Return Stolen Property . Which reads in full: Iraq destroyed much stolen property before it could be returned, and Kuwait claims that large quantities of equipment remain unaccounted for:
  • The UN and Kuwait say Iraq has not returned extensive Kuwaiti state archives and museum pieces, as well as military equipment, including eight Mirage F-1 aircraft, 245 Russian-made fighting vehicles, 90 M113 armored personnel carriers, one Hawk battery, 3,750 Tow and anti-tank missiles, and 675 Russian-made surface-to-air missile batteries. posted by Quiddity at 11:29 PM Who said what?

The Parkinson's Disease Foundation held their annual dinner dance at the Pierre on Tuesday night.
Chairman was Page Morton Black , whose husband, the late Chock Full 'O Nuts coffee tycoon William Black started the foundation in 1957. This year's honoree was Dr. Eric R. Kandel , the 2000 Nobel Prize winner (in Science). Walter Cronkite was host. During dinner "Ace" Greenberg performed his magic act. Mr. Greenberg is quite a serious magician, besides being a serious Wall Street banker (chairman of Bear Stearns), which as we know, can sometimes mean the same thing. Mr. Greenberg's late father had Parkinson Disease.
Among his audience: Lara Dutta , Miss Universe, Morley Safer , Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (14th Dist. Manhattan), and those two irrepressible Manhattan glamor girls who could win the vote anywhere: Pauline Trigere and Kitty Carlisle Hart . Congresswoman Maloney's father has Parkinson's Disease. She is the founding member an co-chair of the Congressional Working Group on Parkinson's Disease, and is very active in getting congress to budget funds for the cause and cure of Parkinson's Disease.
