2. Nobel Prize In Literature 1930 - Presentation Speech
By erik axel karlfeldt of the Swedish Academy.
http://www.nobel.se/literature/laureates/1930/press.html
The Nobel Prize in Literature 1930
Presentation Speech by Erik Axel Karlfeldt , Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy This year's winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature is a native of a part of America which for a long time has had Swedish contacts. He was born at Sauk Centre, a place of about two or three thousand inhabitants in the great cornland of Minnesota. He describes the place in his novel Main Street (1920), though there it is called Gopher Prairie.
It is the great prairie, an undulating land with lakes and oak groves, which has produced that little town and many others exactly like it. The pioneers have need of places to sell their grain, shops to purchase their supplies, banks for their mortgage loans, doctors for their bodies, and clergymen for their souls. There is cooperation between the country and the town, but at the same time there is conflict. Does the town exist for the sake of the country, or the country for the town?
The prairie makes its power felt. During the winters, long and cold as ours, terrific storms dump their snow in the wide streets, between low and shabby houses. The summer scorches with an intense heat and the town smells, because it lacks both sewers and street cleaning. Yet the town naturally feels its superiority; it is the flower of the prairie. It has the economic threads in its hands, and it is the focus of civilization - a concentrated, proud America amidst these earth-bound thralls of foreign origin, Germans and Scandinavians.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Erik Axel Karlfeldt (1864-1931) Swedish poet, master of rhyme and meter, who gained fame with his regional, tradition-bound poetry. Internationally unknown Karlfeldt won the Nobel Prize for Literature posthumously in 1931 - he had refused it in 1918 on the grounds of his position as a secretary of the Nobel Committee, and because of the high proportion of Swedish writers who had already received the award. Although Karlfeld's works were widely read in his country, he has also been called one of the most misunderstood writers. He was familiar with French symbolism, used its literary devices, but found his subjects from the traditional rural way of life.
ty nog jag lidit och nog jag njutit,
att skapa lycka ur vad han brutit.

(from 'Sjukdom') Vildmarks Eyvind Johnson described in his book
Flora och Bellona . He had been seriously ill in 1913 , which made him study his beliefs more confessionally than in the earlier works. In 1916 Karlfeldt married Gerda Ottilia Holmberg; they had four children. The marriage also calmed his vagrant soul, but he still remained a recluse, avoiding publicity. Among Karlfeldt's prose works are his funeral address for the Swedish poet , and Nobel Prize presentation address to Sinclair Lewis . Karlfeldt died in Stockholm on April 8, 1931. His poetry have not been translated widely. In 1938 Charles Warton Stork translated a selection of his verse under the title

Karlfeldt's strong ties to the peasant culture of his rural homeland remained a dominant influence on him all his life. He published his most important works in six volumes of verse: (1895; "Songs of Wilderness and of Love"), Fridolins visor (1898; "Fridolin's Songs"), (1901; "Fridolin's Pleasure Garden"), Flora och Pomona Flora och Bellona (1918), and finally, four years before his death, (1927; "The Horn of Autumn"). Some of his poems have been published in English translation in Arcadia Borealis: Selected Poems of Erik Axel Karlfeldt (1938). In time, even some of his admirers criticized him for employing his gifts so exclusively in the service of a dying local culture.
