WORLD SCIENTISTS' CALL FOR ACTION
AT THE KYOTO CLIMATE SUMMIT
Five years ago, in the World Scientists' Warning to Humanity , 1600 of the world's senior scientists sounded an unprecedented warning: Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms. Addressed to political, industrial, religious, and scientific leaders, the Warning demonstrated that the scientific community had reached a consensus that grave threats imperil the future of humanity and the global environment. However, over four years have passed, and progress has been woefully inadequate. Some of the most serious problems have worsened. Invaluable time has been squandered because so few leaders have risen to the challenge. The December 1997 Climate Summit in Kyoto, Japan, presents a unique opportunity. The world's political leaders can demonstrate a new commitment to the protection of the environment. The goal is to strengthen the 1992 Framework Convention on Climate Change by agreeing to effective controls on human practices affecting climate. This they can and must do, primarily by augmenting the Convention's voluntary measures with legally binding commitments to reduce industrial nations' emissions of heat-trapping gases significantly below 1990 levels in accordance with a near-term timetable.

NOBELS FOR THREE AREA SCIENTISTS
HARVARD PROFESSOR WINS FOR CHEMISTRY; TWO FROM MIT FOR PHYSICS
Author: By David L. Chandler, Globe Staff Date: Thursday, October 18, 1990
Page: Section: NATIONAL/FOREIGN Three Boston-area scientists, two from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one from Harvard University, were among the four winners of this year's Nobel Prizes in physics and chemistry announced yesterday by the Swedish Academy of Sciences. Henry W. Kendall and Jerome I. Friedman of MIT, along with Richard E. Taylor of Stanford University, will share the prize in physics, worth about $700,000, for work in the late 1960s that proved the existence of quarks, the smallest known component of matter. Elias James Corey of Harvard won the prize in chemistry for basic research that revolutionized the ability of chemists to create synthetic versions of organic chemicals in the laboratory. His work made it possible to make many important pharmaceuticals more easily and cheaply and improved the theoretical understanding of how these chemicals work. Corey learned about his $700,000 prize from a graduate student as he arrived at his laboratory yesterday morning. "It was a surprise," said Corey, who has been rumored to be a Nobel candidate for years. Winning the Nobel Prize, he said, "is a statistically improbable event for any scientist. So many good scientists don't get it. I've always maintained a solid skepticism, for which I'm still not sorry."

LATEST NOBEL AFFIRMS MIT LEADERSHIP IN BIOLOGY
Author: By Anthony Flint, Globe Staff Date: Tuesday, October 12, 1993

Section:
METRO With the addition of Phillip A. Sharp to its roster of Nobel laureates, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has confirmed its superpower status in academia unquestionably now in biology, and not only in physics, chemistry and economics, where 19 of the past 24 awards have gone. MIT's grand total of two dozen Nobelists including current or former faculty and staff and alumni is one of the highest concentrations of any academic institution in the United States. There are seven Nobel laureates now on the faculty who won the prize while at MIT: Jerome I. Friedman (physics, 1990); Henry W. Kendall (physics, 1990); Robert M. Solow (economics, 1987); Susumu Tonegawa, (medicine/physiology, 1987); Franco Modigliani (economics, 1985); Samuel C.C. Ting (physics, 1976); and Paul A. Samuelson (economics, 1970). Har Gobind Khorana won the Nobel prize in medicine and physiology in 1968 and then came to MIT. David Baltimore won the prize in medicine and physiology in 1975 while at MIT, left the institute for a few years but is now returning.

A Letter from Physics Nobel Laureates
To Senators of the 106th Congress: We urge you to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. The United States signed and ratified the Limited Test Ban Treaty in 1963. In the years since, the nation has played a leadership role in actions to reduce nuclear risks, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty extension, the ABM Treaty, STARTs I and II, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty negotiations. Fully informed technical studies have concluded that continued nuclear testing is not required to retain confidence in the safety, reliability and performance of nuclear weapons in the United States’ stockpile, provided science and technology programs necessary for stockpile stewardship are maintained. The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty is central to future efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons. Ratification of the Treaty will mark an important advance in uniting the world in an effort to contain and reduce the dangers of nuclear arms. It is imperative that the CTBT be ratified.
