NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR KIM DAE JUNG
by Johan Galtung and Dietrich Fischer
South Korea's President Kim Dae Jung, recipient of this
year's Nobel Peace Prize, has long struggled for democracy and
human rights in South Korea and reconciliation with North
Korea. His efforts culminated so far in the historic June 15 summit in Pyongyang with North Korean President Kim Jong Il. This is an excellent choice, but the peace process might have been advanced even more if the prize had also been given to Kim Jong-Il it takes two to make a hand shake as when the prize was given not only to Sadat but to Begin, not only

Nobel Lecture, Oslo, December 10, 2000 Your Majesty, Your Royal Highnesses, Members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Human rights and peace have a sacred ground in Norway. The Nobel Peace Prize is a solemn message that inspires all humanity to dedicate ourselves to peace. I am infinitely grateful to be given the honor. But I think of the countless people and colleagues in Korea, who have given themselves willingly to democracy and human rights and the dream of national unification. And I must conclude that the honor should go to them.
I also think of the many countries and friends around the world, who have given generous support to the efforts of my people to achieve democratization and inter-Korean reconciliation. I thank them very sincerely.
I know that the first South-North Korean summit meeting in June and the start of inter-Korean reconciliation is one of the reasons for which I am given the Nobel Peace Prize.

President Kim Dae-jung was born on December 3, 1925 in a small village on an island of South Korea's southwestern coast. He graduated from a commercial high school in 1943. When the Syngman Rhee Administration (1948-1960) began to become increasingly dictatorial, he decided to enter politics. His political career proved to be rather turbulent from the start. He was elected to the National Assembly in a bi-election in 1961 after two unsuccessful bids, but, within three days of his election, the National Assembly was dissolved following a military coup d'etat led by Major General Park Chung Hee. When he was elected again to the National Assembly in 1963, he began to emerge as a junior leader within his own party. He served as the spokesman for the Democratic Party in 1965 and became the chairman of the party's Policy Planning Committee the following year. As President Park Chung Hee sought constitutional revisions in 1969 to allow himself to run for a third term, Kim Dae-jung gave an address against the scheme in an outdoor rally, and he was widely acclaimed for his vision and courage. He was chosen the presidential candidate of the New Democratic Party in 1971, running against the all-powerful incumbent, Park Chung Hee. Despite the obstructionist tactics and illegal electioneering practices of the ruling party, he garnered over 46 per cent of the votes cast.

NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE
October 13, 2000
Elizabeth Farnsworth and Selig Harrison, former northeast Asia bureau chief for The Washington Post , discuss Nobel Peace Prize winner Kim Dae Jung, president of South Korea. JIM LEHRER: In your dream world, do you see North and South Korea coming together again? Is that your goal? KIM DAE JUNG: To realize peace on the Korean peninsula, and to develop exchange, cooperation between both Koreas, they are the, you know, immediate target of our government. Unification is not our present goal. That is a future program. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: Long before he was elected president, Kim, now 75, spent four decades struggling for democracy in South Korea. He entered politics in the 19t0s and became a member of the national assembly in 1961. As the opposition leader he rose to major prominence by nearly defeating then-dictator Park Chung-Hee in 1971. In subsequent years, he spent a total of 15 years either under house arrest in prison or living in exile. He ran three more times for president, finally winning in 1997. In awarding the prize today, the Nobel committee chairman said this: GUNNAR BERGER: In the course of South Korea's decades of authoritarian rule, despite repeated threats on his life and long periods in exile, Kim Dae-Jung gradually emerged as the country's leading spokesman for democracy.

Bibliography Nobel Prize Committee's Announcement " In the course of South Korea's decades of authoritarian rule, despite repeated threats on his life and long periods in exile, Kim Dae Jung gradually emerged as his country's leading spokesman for democracy. His election in 1997 as the republic's president marked South Korea's definitive entry among the world's democracies. As president, Kim Dae Jung has sought to consolidate democratic government and to promote internal reconciliation within South Korea. "With great moral strength, Kim Dae Jung has stood out in East Asia as a leading defender of universal human rights against attempts to limit the relevance of those rights in Asia. His commitment in favour of democracy in Burma and against repression in East Timor has been considerable. "Through his "sunshine policy", Kim Dae Jung has attempted to overcome more than fifty years of war and hostility between North and South Korea. His visit to North Korea gave impetus to a process which has reduced tension between the two countries. There may now be hope that the cold war will also come to an end in Korea. Kim Dae Jung has worked for South Korea's reconciliation with other neighbouring countries, especially Japan."

KIM DAE JUNG WINNER OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE 2000 A Commentary by Irwin Abrams The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the last of its century of prizes to President Kim Dae Jung of South Korea "for his work for democracy and human rights in South Korea and East Asia in general and for peace and reconciliation with North Korea in particular." Once again the Committee used its prize to further an ongoing peace process. Kim Dae Jung had initiated the efforts which led to the summit meeting in June with his counterpart, Kim Jong Il of North Korea. This was the first meeting of these two heads of states still technically at war after five decades. Not long ago the two Koreas had fought a stormy naval battle over a territorial dispute, and still today more than a million soldiers, including United States troops, are facing one another across the world's most heavily militarized border. But the summit meeting in North Korea's capital of Pyongyang was followed by the spectacle at the Olympic Games of athletes from North and South Korea marching together and by reunions of long divided families. Nobel prizes for statesmen have been criticized as rewarding individuals for actions taken by dint of their office, but who have shown no enduring commitment to peace. Kim Dae Jung, however, has worked since 1971 for peaceful coexistence between the two Koreas and their eventual unification. When South Korea was ruled by an anticommunist authoritarian government, he suffered beatings, attempted assassinations, imprisonment, a death sentence and exile. In 1973 he was kidnapped from a Tokyo hotel by South Korean agents and would have been thrown into the sea, bound and blindfolded, had not United States operatives saved him.

The Nobel Peace Prize and Korea's Kim Dae-jung
By James Conachy 3 November 2000 Use this version to print Behind the rhetoric surrounding last month's award of the Nobel Peace Prize to 75-year-old South Korean President Kim Dae-jung is an elementary truth: The prize is consistently given to figures who have been instrumental in effecting strategic shifts in conflict-torn parts of the world that serve the interests of the major capitalist powers and corporations. In the 1990s, Nobel's have been awarded to South Africa's Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk for managing the ending of apartheid; Yassir Arafat, Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres for effecting the Middle East agreement in 1994; and David Trimble and John Hume, the major brokers of the Northern Ireland accord. In each case, the shift has been hailed as facilitating the flow of transnational investment and trade. The award to Kim Dae-jung is no exception. In June, at a joint summit between Kim and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, the two Korea's signed a five-point accord that will open up the insular Stalinist state in the North to capitalist development and exploitation by South Korean and transnational corporations. In the months since, reunions of divided families and the joint entry of the Korean teams into the Sydney Olympics have been interpreted as signs of a genuine rapprochement and the beginning of the end of the Cold War division of Korea and its legacy of military tension.

Nobel Peace Prize 2000 to Kim Dae Jung, president of South Korea.
I am very pleased to learn that this year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the President of South Korea, Kim Dae Jung. It is well deserved," commented Foreign Minister Jagland. "President Kim’s tireless struggle for democracy in South Korea has many parallels to Nelson Mandela’s efforts in South Africa. Both have experienced many years of persecution, murder attempts, imprisonment and harassment. President Kim has devoted his entire life to combating the dictatorship in Korea. When he was elected president in 1997, it was the first time an opposition party had come to power in South Korea by peaceful means. This was a real breakthrough and a victory for democracy. "Despite the protests of the opposition, Kim Dae Jung has involved Korea in international peace operations and has played an essential role in stopping the killings in East Timor and in establishing a UN force there. He has also taken a clear stand in favour of democracy in Burma. Today Kim Dae Jung is the foremost champion of democracy in Asia," says Foreign Minister Jagland. "His efforts to promote peaceful reunification with North Korea have been just as long-term and resolute. It is particularly due to the foundation laid by Kim Dae Jung through his confidence-building efforts that the summit in Pyongyang came about in June this year. This event gives reason to hope that a lasting reconciliation and reunification process has now begun in earnest," says Foreign Minister Jagland.
