[NOBEL PEACE PRIZE] World-Wide Applause
The nation and global community honor Kim Dae-jung
T he Nobel Prize is the latest, most prestigious international award for President Kim Dae-jung, who, as one of Asia's most prominent dissidents, had already won numerous recognition for his past sufferings and contributions to South Korea's sometimes painful transition to democracy. ¡ãFireworks light up the sky over Seoul in honor of President Kim Dae-jung's winning the Novel Peace Prize on Oct. 13. They include the Bruno Kreisky Human Rights Award back in 1981; George Meany Human Rights Award of the AFL-CIO in 1987; Union Medal from the Union Theological Seminary in New York in 1994; the Philadelphia Liberty Medal in 1999; and the Thorolf Rafto Prize from Norway just late last month. Both the Philadelphia Medal and the Rafto Prize were seen as precursors to a Nobel honor because some of their past winners - like South Africa's Nelson Mandela and Myanmar's dissident Aung San Suu Kyi - went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize. For Kim, 75, the Nobel Peace Prize, for which he was nominated 14 times, is a personal honor that he has long pursued since he was first nominated back in 1987.

[AWARD ADDRESS] Good to the Last Drop
Top Nobel official praises Kim's courage
F ollowing is the abridged text of an address by Gunnar Berge, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, on the occasion of the presentation of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2000 to Kim Dae-jung at Oslo City Hall on Dec. 10. - Ed. ¡ãPresident Kim Dae-jung and First Lady Lee Hee-ho pose with Norwegian King Harald V at the royal palace in Oslo on Dec. 10. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2000 to Kim Dae-jung. He receives the prize for his lifelong work for democracy and human rights in South Korea and East Asia in general, and for peace and reconciliation with North Korea in particular. We welcome the laureate here today. The peace prize is a reward for the steps that have been taken so far. However, as so often before in the history of the Nobel peace prize, it is intended this year, too, as an encouragement to advance still further along the long road to peace and reconciliation. This is to a large extent a matter of courage: Kim Dae-jung has had the will to break with 50 years of ingrained hostility, and to reach out a cooperative hand across what has probably been the world's most heavily guarded frontier. His has been the kind of personal and political courage which, regrettably, is all too often missing in other conflict-ridden regions.

Kim Dae-jung: A Tale of Two Reputations
By Michael Breen
Los Angeles Times Service Five years ago, South Koreans cautiously elected a lifelong dissident, Kim Dae-jung, in hopes he would save them from the near-bankruptcy brought on by the Asian financial crisis. Within a few months, his approval rating soared to 90 percent. Two years later, he went on to become the first Korean to win a Nobel Peace Prize. As he prepares to leave office next week, the economy is booming again. But Kim's reputation is in shreds and his ``sunshine policy'' of engagement with North Korea is unpopular. He also faces the possibility of a trial over allegations that he bribed the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, to hold their historic summit in 2000. Previous South Korean presidents have fallen victim to the same pattern of over-expectation and fall. But Kim Dae-jung's tumble from grace is especially puzzling to outsiders, given his status as the hero of Korean democracy. Consider, first, the scale of Kim's successes. South Korea was the first country to recover from the Asian economic crisis, and under his watch it has become the world's most wired nation. On the social front, women's rights and consumer and environmental activism have made gains.

President Kim Dae-jung
Five Years of Glory and Tribulation
President Kim Dae-jung was inaugurated on Feb. 25 five years ago with high expectations and acclaims both at home and abroad because of his reform-mindedness and his stature as a lifetime democratic fighter. But he is to step down tomorrow with a record of blames probably outweighing that of praises. His election represented the first ever power transition to the opposition party since the foundation of the Republic in 1948. He was expected to restore the nation's economy on the brink of collapse hit by the 1997 financial crisis with his economic acumen and put an end to the chronic regional antagonism as a representative from the Honam area, North and South Cholla Provinces, people from which had been badly discriminated against by those from other regions before his election. President Kim successfully steered the nation under the regime of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to overcome the strains of the foreign exchange crisis far sooner than expected through harsh restructuring which forced hundreds of thousands of innocent workers to give up their jobs overnight. However, the cost is enormous because the government is now suffering from tremendous debts entailed by its use of huge public funds to bail out insolvent enterprises. Households' debts are also extremely high.

Nobel Committee Award Year 2000 Peace Prize to President Kim Dae Jung of South Korea The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced its decision this week to award the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2000 to Kim Dae Jung, the South Korean President, for his work for democracy and human rights in South Korea and in East Asia in general, and for peace and reconciliation with North Korea in particular. In the course of South Korea's decades of authoritarian rule, despite imprisonment, repeated threats on his life and long periods in exile, Kim Dae Jung gradually emerged as his country's leading spokesman for democracy. His election in 1997 as the republic's president marked South Korea's definitive entry among the world's democracies. As president, Kim Dae Jung has sought to consolidate democratic government and to promote internal reconciliation within South Korea. In a statement UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan warmly welcomed the decision to award this year's Prize to President Kim Dae Jung who he praised for his "unique and historic contribution" to the cause of peace in the Korean Peninsula. The Nobel citation refers to Kim Dae Jung's 'great moral strength' in standing out in East Asia as a leading defender of universal human rights. His commitment in favour of democracy in Burma and against repression in East Timor has been considerable.

Bestselling Kim Jong Il Book Banned, Publisher Arrested!
November 10, 2000 The Government of Nobel Peace Prize winning Kim Dae Jung ordered the bestselling "Kim Jong Il's Reunification Strategy" banned and the publisher of the book arrested. All the copies of its third print were confisticated from all the bookstores across South Korea, according to a phone call from Seoul. This is a second time that a book by Kim Myung Chul, an influential expatriate Korean military and diplomatic writer in Tokyo, has been banned in South Korea. The first ban was imposed in January in 1999 when an unauthorized translation of his first book "Kim Jong Il: Day of Having Korea Reunified" was published in Seoul. South Korean national intelligence agency officials raided the downtown office of Sallim-to, publisher of the book, from 5:30 to 6 pm, on November 8. They arrested Mr. Song Young-hyun and seized all the copied just about to be shipped to bookstores. The alleged charge against him is a violation of the National Security Law which punishes any act of establishing contact with a hostile organization or any person affiliated with it and any act of praising a hostile organization. An offender faces a maximum penalty of death. "Kim Jong Il's Reunification Strategy" has been a bestseller since it hit bookstores in South Korea last May on the eve of the Pyongyang summit between Kim Jong Il and Kim Dae Jung. Almost all the major South Korean dailies went out of their way to prominently cover the publication of the book. The South Korean government affiliated Yonhap News Agency reported it had been on a bestseller list. Japanese TV stations and Newsweek described the book as selling in a boom market in South Korea.

Dear President Kim Dae Jung:
Do you speak with a Forked Tongue?
Lee Wha Rang, May 11, 2002 Columbus, Ohio
My Dear President Kim:
About 4 long years ago, you were elected to the Blue House and I was happy for Korea. I believed, if anyone, you were the one, probably the only one, to right the many wrongs in South Korea and perhaps, in North Koreas as well. Your life-long fight for human rights, democracy and Christian ethics needs no introduction or recanting. You have written books on your life-story and they are available in English. Believe it or not, General Kim Jung Il thinks your life story will make a good movie. In fact, your friends in Japan have made a movie based on your narrow escape from death in Japan, which incidentally, I don't quite dig. The Korean spooks could have rubbed you out easily - why the boat-ride in a spy ship? You moved into the Blue House proud and exhuming honesty, sincerity and incorruptibility. Your predecessor, Kim Young Sam, had Gen. Chun Doo Whan and Gen. Roh Tae Woo, the two dethroned military dictators of South Korea tried and jailed. I believe Kim had lots of guts to take on the might military - the cradle of ultra-rightists and a public shelter for pro-Japanese traitors and their progeny. Unfortunately, Korea's economic miracle busted to Kim's face and he ended his days in the Blue House with rotten eggs on his face. Oh, yes - there was this nasty case of his sons making some easy money without his approval or knowledge - I believe.

He told the BBC in an interview that his drive for closer ties with Stalinist North Korea, culminating in June's historic summit in Pyongyang between the two nations, was a joint effort. "I did think that it would have been better had the chairman shared this prize with me, in particular since the main reason for my being given the award this year is the historic South-North Korean summit," Kim said. "That summit was not just my own work, but the joint work with Chairman Kim," he added. Kim, 74, aims to bind the 70 million people of the two Koreas through business and social exchange.
