Address delivered in Acceptance of Nobel Peace Prize
10 December 1964
Oslo, Norway Your Majesty, Your Royal Highness, Mr. President, excellencies, ladies and gentlemen: I accept the Nobel Prize for Peace at a moment when twenty-two million Negroes of the United States are engaged in a creative battle to end the long night of racial injustice. I accept this award on behalf of a civil rights movement which is moving with determination and a majestic scorn for risk and danger to establish a reign of freedom and a rule of justice. I am mindful that only yesterday in Birmingham, Alabama, our children, crying out for brotherhood, were answered with fire hoses, snarling dogs, and even death. I am mindful that only yesterday in Philadelphia, Mississippi, young people seeking to secure the right to vote were brutalized and murdered. I am mindful that debilitating and grinding poverty afflicts my people and chains them to the lowest rung of the economic ladder. Therefore, I must ask why this prize is awarded to a movement which is beleaguered and committed to unrelenting struggle, and to a movement which has not yet won the very peace and brotherhood which is the essence of the Nobel Prize. After contemplation, I conclude that this award, which I receive on behalf of that movement, is a profound recognition that nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time: the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression.

King, Martin Luther, Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Julian Wasser [Video] (b. Jan. 15, 1929, Atlanta, Ga., U.S.d. April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tenn.), eloquent black Baptist minister who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. His leadership was fundamental to that movement's success in ending the legal segregation of blacks in the South and other portions of the United States. King rose to national prominence through the organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, promoting nonviolent tactics such as the massive March on Washington (1963) to achieve civil rights. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964. The U.S. Congress voted to observe a national holiday in his honour, beginning in 1986, on the third Monday in January.
Early years.
The Montgomery bus boycott.
While in Boston, King met Coretta Scott, a native Alabamian who was studying at the New England Conservatory of Music. They were married in 1953 and had four children. King had been pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala., slightly more than a year when the city's small group of civil-rights advocates decided to contest racial segregation on that city's public bus system. On Dec. 1, 1955, a black woman named Rosa Parks had refused to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger and as a consequence had been arrested for violating the city's segregation law. Black activists formed the Montgomery Improvement Association to boycott the transit system and chose King as their leader. He had the advantage of being a young, well-trained man who was too new in town to have made enemies; he was generally respected, and his family connections and professional standing would enable him to find another pastorate should the boycott fail.

Martin Luther King He led a mass struggle for racial equality that doomed segregation and changed America forever BY JACK E. WHITE [an error occurred while processing this directive] t is a testament to the greatness of Martin Luther King Jr. that nearly every major city in the U.S. has a street or school named after him. It is a measure of how sorely his achievements are misunderstood that most of them are located in black neighborhoods. Three decades after King was gunned down on a motel balcony in Memphis, Tenn., he is still regarded mainly as the black leader of a movement for black equality. That assessment, while accurate, is far too restrictive. For all King did to free blacks from the yoke of segregation, whites may owe him the greatest debt, for liberating them from the burden of America's centuries-old hypocrisy about race. It is only because of King and the movement that he led that the U.S. can claim to be the leader of the "fr ee world" without inviting smirks of disdain and disbelief. Had he and the blacks and whites who marched beside him failed, vast regions of the U.S. would have remained morally indistinguishable from South Africa under apartheid, with terrible consequence s for America's standing among nations. How could America have convincingly inveighed against the Iron Curtain while an equally oppressive Cotton Curtain remained draped across the South? Page 2 Page 3

King, Martin Luther, Jr. (1929-1968), American clergyman and Nobel laureate, one of the principal leaders of the American civil rights movement and a prominent advocate of nonviolent resistance to racial oppression.
Education and Early Life
King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929, the eldest son of Martin Luther King, Sr., a Baptist minister, and Alberta Williams King. He entered Morehouse College at the age of 15 and was ordained a Baptist minister at the age of 17. Graduating from Crozer Theological Seminary as class president in 1951, he then did postgraduate work at Boston University.
King's studies at Crozer and Boston led him to explore the works of the Indian nationalist Mohandas K. Gandhi, whose ideas became the core of his own philosophy of nonviolent protest. While in Boston, he met Coretta Scott of Marion, Alabama. They were married in June 1953, and the following year King accepted an appointment as pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
Civil Rights Leadership
On a visit to India in 1959 King was able to work out more clearly his understanding of Satyagraha, Gandhi's principle of nonviolent persuasion, which King had determined to use as his main instrument of social protest. The next year he gave up his pastorate in Montgomery to become copastor (with his father) of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, a strategic move that enabled him to participate more effectively in the national leadership of the burgeoning civil rights movement.

Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr.
"The quality, not the longevity, of one's life is what is important." -Martin Luther King King derived his philosophy of nonviolence from the teachings of Christianity, Henry Thoreau's social writings, and the civil disobedience methods employed by the great Indian leader, Mohatma Gandhi . King was arrested several times for leading protests against injustice and discrimination. Martin Luther King, Jr., came from a family of Baptist ministers. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He attended public schools in that city, Morehouse College , and Crozer Theological Seminary, and he received a Ph.D. from Boston University in 1955. He wrote several books about the quest and the need for equality for black people. He had millions of followers among all races in all parts of the United States, though his approach was controversial within the black community. Dr. King's life was constantly in danger. He experienced jeering, bombing, stabbing, stoning, and all types of derogatory and sometimes violent haranguing. He rejected the ideas of Black Power, separatism, and militancy for blacks. Paradoxically, violence cut short his mission when an assassin shot and killed him on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. In Atlanta, his tombstone reads, "Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, I'm free at last!" In November 1983, President Reagan signed a bill designating the third Monday in January, beginning in 1986, as an official federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

BIOGRAPHY
Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Alberta Williams King and Martin Luther King, Sr. Alberta King's father was the minister at Ebenezer Baptist Church where Reverend King, Sr. and Reverend King, Jr. served as pa stors. Martin Luther King, Jr. earned his B.A. degree at Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia, a B.D. degree at Croser Theological Seminary, Chester, Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. degree at Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts. In 1954, Reverend King began his pastoral career at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. His involvement in the civil rights movement was the result of Mrs. Rosa Parks refusal to give up her seat to a white person. When the Montgomery Im provement Association was formed in December 1955, King was elected president of the association. The United States Supreme Court decision declaring Alabama law segregation on buses illegal was the victory from which King emerged as a national hero and r esulted in the formation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He inspired people of all races and ethnic backgrounds to join in a peaceful, nonviolent protest against segregation. On August 29, 1963, he made his most famous speech, I Have a Dream , at the Lincoln Memorial to an audience, measured, at that time, to be the largest civil rights demonstration in the history of the United States.
