Max Perutz, 1914 - 2002
The society mourns the death of one of its Patrons, the Nobel Laureate Max Perutz. Professor Perutz had been affiliated with the society since giving a CUSS talk on the life of Lise Meitner in 1997. He was a former head of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1962 for work on the structure of haemoglobin. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy
Carl Zeiss held an international workshop on fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) in Jena. The aim of the meeting was to increase awareness of this comparatively young technology. FCS is used for pharmaceutical drug screening and, in fundamental biochemical research, for the examination of molecule interactions. It is capable of single-molecule sensitivity and needs sample sizes as low as 1 nL. FCS has permitted the characterisation of the new membrane receptors of major medical importance, e.g. the C-peptide receptor. New possibilities for quantitative analysis in the cellular field are being provided by the combination of imaging techniques, such as laser scanning microscopy, with the analytical FCS technique. Professor Rudolf Rigler of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and Kathy Blanco-Soulas of Carl Zeiss during the FCS Workshop. The abstracts from the workshop are available on the Zeiss web site at www.zeiss.de/fcsevents

Microbe Hunters by Paul de Kruif, well known in its time, which influenced me to begin medicine at university as a way into microbiology.
At the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, I took the pre-medical course and, in my second year, I took, among other subjects, biochemistry, or physiological chemistry as it was then called, which stood me in good stead in later years when I came to face biological material. However, I felt the lack of a deeper foundation, and moved to chemistry and this in turn led me to physics and mathematics. So finally I took a science degree.
I had by then decided that I wanted to do research in physics and I went to the University of Cape Town The Optical Principles of the Diffraction of X-rays - still a standard work. James wrote beautifully and fully and took great pains to make everything clear.
Supported by an 1851 Exhibition Scholarship and also by a research studentship to Trinity College, I went to
