"The medicines of tomorrow will depend upon research being done today, for which animal experimentation is essential. Ignore the need for that research and we shall lose the cures that we are entitled to expect in the next 50 years for illnesses that afflict hundreds of millions of people such as cancer, heart disease, viral diseases, malaria, schistosomiasis and sickle cell anaemia." - Sir John Vane, Nobel Prizewinner 1982
Emil Adolf von BEHRING - develops use of serum treatment especially in diphtheria. Sir Ronald ROSS - discovers the life cycle of the malaria parasite in humans and mosquitos. Niels Ryberg FINSEN - invents treatment of diseases, especially skin tuberculosis, with UV light. Ivan Petrovich PAVLOV - discovers the physiology of digestion.

History of the Prize
The Nobel Prize
Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist. He invented dynamite and became very rich. He gave more than 9 million dollars of his fortune to set up the Nobel prizes. Each year money from this fund goes to those who have most helped humanity. The Nobel Committee gives prizes for important work in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, peace, and economics. Prize winners receive a cash prize (currently $1 million), a gold medal (above) and a certificate (below).

For his work on serum therapy, especially its application against diphtheria, by which he has opened a new road in the domain of medical science and thereby placed in the hands of the physician a victorious weapon against illness and death.
1902 Sir Ronald Ross (1857-1932) British
For his work on malaria, by which he has shown how it enters the organism and thereby has laid the foundation for successful research on this disease and how to combat it.

History of Medicine:
the Nobel Prize in Medicine
and Physiology (1901-1910) Alfred Bernhard Nobel was an outstanding man who acquired a vast knowledge in chemistry and engineering. He invented explosives and detonators, but his paramount invention was dynamite.

His worldwide interests in explosives, in addition to large holdings in the Baku oil fields of Russia brought him an immense fortune.
Generous in humanitarian and scientific philanthropies, he left the bulk of his fortune in trust to establish what came to be the most highly regarded of international awards, the Nobel Prize.
In his will he stated that the awards should be made "to those who, in the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind"
The institutions cited as prize awardees by Alfred Nobel in his will are the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (physics and chemistry), The Royal Caroline Medico-Chirurgical Institute (physiology or medicine) and the Swedish Academy (literature)-all in Stockholm-and the Norwegian Nobel Committee (peace) in Oslo.
These institutions began to distribute the prizes in 1901, five years after Nobel death. In this section we shall describe the laureates in Medicine and Physiology.
