The Nobel Prize is the first international award given yearly since 1901 for achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The prize consists of a medal, a personal diploma, and a monetary prize.
The University of California, Santa Barbara, has become an institution internationally known for its research transcending traditional boundaries between academic departments and scholars' collaboration. This year UCSB was honored with two Nobel Prizes, in Chemistry and Physics. These are not the first Nobel Prizes to be presented to UCSB University Professors. UCSB received its first Nobel Prize in 1998, awarded to Prof. Walter Kohn for his extensive work in Chemistry. This year Prof. Herbert Kroemer, of electrical and computer engineering, shares the Nobel Prize in physics "for developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed and opto-electronics," according to the Swedish Academy. Prof. Alan J. Heeger, of physics and materials, shares the Nobel Prize in chemistry "for the discovery and development of conductive polymers." The University's Chancellor, Henry T. Yang, remarks that these Nobel Prizes are "a testament to the interdisciplinary nature of so much of the research on this campus. Pioneering research that cuts across the disciplines has become the hallmark of research at UCSB."

ITHACA, N.Y. Walter Kohn, professor of physics emeritus at the University of California at Santa Barbara and winner of the National Medal of Science, will be the Hans A. Bethe Lecturer at Cornell University. Kohn will give a free, public lecture, "Shifting Viewpoints in Condensed Matter Physics, 1950-1995," on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. in Schwartz Auditorium, Rockefeller Hall. While on campus, Kohn also will deliver these talks: A physics colloquium, "Density Functional Theory of Electronic Structure in Physics and Chemistry," Monday, Sept. 30, at 4:30 p.m. in Schwartz Auditorium. A condensed matter theory seminar, "Edge Electronic Structure, The Airy Gas," on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 1:15 p.m. in 701 Clark Hall. Kohn, a UCSB faculty member since 1979, is a theoretical physicist with expertise in condensed mater, or solid-state physics, and is credited with many contributions to the theory of the electronic structure of solids. Kohn earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics and a master's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Toronto. He earned a doctorate in 1948 in theoretical physics from Harvard University, where he remained as an instructor for two years.

    Tietokoneiden kehitys mahdollisti 1960-luvulla kvanttimekaniikasta kemiaan sovellettujen monimutkaisten yhtälöiden ratkaisemisen molekyylien ominaisuuksia tutkittaessa. Kemiassa alkoi uusi aikakausi: kvanttikemiaan perustuva laskennallinen kemia/molekyylimallitus. Kokeellisen työn, ns. märkäkemian, lisäksi voitiin molekyylien ominaisuuksia tarkastella myöskin laskennallisesti kuvaamalla elektronien liikettä matemaattisilla yhtälöillä. Nykyisin kvanttikemia on tärkeä menetelmä, joka kokeellisen työn rinnalla auttaa selvittämään kemiallisten systeemien toimintaa, kuten katalyyttien rakennetta, kemiallisia reaktioita, molekyylien adsorbotumista pintaan, entsyymien aktiivisia paikkoja jne. Tietokoneiden laskentakapasiteetin tuplautuessa lähes joka 1.5 vuosi on mahdollista laskea yhä suurempien systeemien, kuten pieniä proteiineja (crambin 46 aminohappoa), kvanttikemian avulla.

  • Mental health and depression UC professor awarded Nobel Prize in chemistry Walter Kohn of the University of California at Santa Barbara and John Pople of Northwestern University are winners of the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry. They will share $978,000. "The laureates have each made pioneering contributions in developing methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved," said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on making the announcement Tuesday. Kohn, a physicist, was cited for his development of density-functional theory the basis of many aspects of computational chemistry, in which the geometrical structure of molecules can be mapped and reactions predicted. Pople, a mathematician, received the award for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry. His 1970 computer program, Gaussian, allows chemists to apply quantum calculations in making rapid, reasonably accurate estimates of molecular behavior. Improvements in the Gaussian program, the Nobel committee said, have been so dramatic that it "is now used by thousands of chemists in universities and commercial companies the world over." Kohn was the second UC professor this week to receive a Nobel Prize Louis Ignarro, a professor in the department of molecular and medical pharmacology at UCLA's School of Medicine, was co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The number of UC faculty who have received the Nobel Prize now stands at 34. No other public university system worldwide has won more Nobel prizes than the University of California.

    The signers of a recent anti-war statement believe you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know the United States should not go to war with Iraq - you just have to be a chemist or theoretical physicist. Forty Nobel laureates have signed a statement opposing "a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support." The statement was released in a press conference Tuesday morning at the Santa Barbara home of Walter Kohn, co-winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry and former UCSB professor of theoretical physics. Alan Heeger, former UCSB chemistry professor and co-winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize in chemistry, also attended. The 74-word statement acknowledged that war "may indeed lead to victory in the short term," but included warnings of "unintended ... medical, environmental, moral, spiritual, political and legal consequences." Forty of the 130 living American Nobel laureates signed the statement, with six expressly declining to sign while the rest chose not to respond.

The declaration was organized by Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon. The signatories include 19 winners of the physics prize. The declaration reads: “The undersigned oppose a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support. Military operations against Iraq may indeed lead to a relatively swift victory in the short term. But war is characterized by surprise, human loss and unintended consequences. Even with a victory, we believe that the medical, economic, environmental, moral, spiritual, political and legal consequences of an American preventive attack on Iraq would undermine, not protect, US security and standing in the world.” The signatories include Norman Ramsey, who worked on the Manhattan Project, and Charles Townes, a former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon. Townes was also chairman of a federal panel that studied nuclear warheads.
