about this page Walter Kohn is a condensed matter theorist who has made seminal contributions to the understanding of the electronic structure of materials. He played the leading role in the development of density functional theory, which has revolutionized scientists' approach to the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solid materials in physics, chemistry and materials science. He received the Nobel prize for chemistry for this work in 1998. With the advent of supercomputers, density functional theory has become an essential tool for electronic materials science. Walter Kohn has also made major contributions to the physics of semiconductors, superconductivity, surface physics and catalysis. He was the founding director of the National Science Foundation's Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The Institute brings together leading scientists from around the world to work on major problems in theoretical physics and related fields.

Web posted at: 11:09 a.m. EDT (1509 GMT) STOCKHOLM, Sweden (CNN) Two researchers at American universities, Austrian-born Walter Kohn and John Pople of Britain, won the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry on Tuesday. "The laureates have each made pioneering contributions in developing methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved," said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in its award announcement. Kohn and Pople will share the 7.6-million-kronor ($978,000) prize for separate accomplishments. Kohn was cited for development of density-functional theory and Pople for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry. Both Kohn and Pople have been working in the United States for many years.

A physics professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Kohn was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize for his leading role in the development of density-functional theory, which has revolutionized scientists’ approach to the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solid materials in physics, chemistry and materials science. With the density-functional theory and the power of supercomputers, scientists can more easily "see" into the atomic structure of matter. Density-functional theory is a reformulation of quantum mechanics that makes possible the efficient calculation of electronic properties in many electron systems. The density-functional theory carries importance in a broad range of properties in condensed matter physics and quantum chemistry. An author of more than 200 scientific articles and reviews, he has made major contributions to the physics of semiconductors, superconductivity and surface physics.

Nobel Laureate in Chemistry to Speak at CSUN
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Nov. 17, 2000) - Walter Kohn, the 1998 winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry, will speak at Cal State Northridge on Thursday, Dec. 7. Kohn will be speaking from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Room 2132 in the Science Building 2 near the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge. "It's a great honor for us to host him here on campus," said Adrian Herzog, chair of CSUN's Department of Physics and Astronomy. Herzog said the Nobel laureate has ties to the campus with his work in materials science with physics professor Nicholas Kiossis, director of CSUN's Materials Science Research Center. Kohn, a physics professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara, was awarded the prestigious prize for development of density-functional theory, which simplifies the mathematical description of the bonding between atoms that make up molecules. His approach makes calculations according to an average number of electrons located in any point, rather than trying to establish the motion of each electron in every atom in every molecule. This reliable model has enabled scientists to study large molecules that previously were too complex and unwieldy to understand.

Quantum Achievements Win Nobel Prize in Chemistry

John A. Pople Sharing the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry are a physicist and a developer of computational codes that made the physicist's concepts more easily applicable to the study of large molecular systems. Walter Kohn, 75, of the University of California at Santa Barbara, and John A. Pople, 72, of Northwestern University, have made pioneering contributions in developing quantum chemistry methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved. Kohn was cited for the development of the density-functional theory and Pople for the development of computational methods in quantum chemistry. Kohn, a physicist, says of winning the chemistry prize: "You may think they made a mistake, but interdisciplinary acts can be fruitful." Quantum mechanics makes it theoretically possible to understand and calculate how electrons and atomic nuclei interact to build up matter in all its forms. Quantum chemistrythe application of quantum mechanics to chemical problemsexploits this knowledge to describe the molecular system. In the 1960s, two events became decisive: the development of an entirely new theory for describing the spatial distribution of electrons and the use of the increasing potential offered by the computer. Kohn's theoretical work has formed the basis for simplifying the mathematics in descriptions of the bonding of atoms, a prerequisite for many of today's calculations. Pople developed the entire quantum-chemical methodology now used in various branches of chemistry.
