New research building officially opens
T he Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Buildingplus the Aab Institute of Biomedical Sciences and the educational facilities in the William and Mildred Levine Pavilion that are housed thereis now officially open for business. Three days of celebration, ceremonies, and educational programs were held September 15-17 to mark the occasion. Highlights included the first lecture given in the auditorium of the new education facility, followed by the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Levine Pavilion on September 15. The following day, a keynote lecture by Arthur Kornberg '41M (MD), a 1959 recipient of the Nobel Prize in medicine, was a prelude to the grand-opening ceremony of the research building that is named in his honor. Kornberg's Nobel Prize medal is on permanent display in the lobby of the new research building. Also on September 16 the Aab Institute was dedicated, which is named for Richard Aab and his family who donated $5 million to help establish the new research institute.

Medical research building gets its name
T he Medical Center has announced that it will name its new medical research building in honor of Arthur Kornberg '41M (MD), a 1959 recipient of the Nobel Prize in medicine. In the 1950s, he discovered the chemical steps by which living cells replicate DNA, the genetic "blue print" of all forms of life. After unraveling the process of DNA replication, Kornberg became the first scientist to synthesize DNA in a test tubea feat that stands as one of the most important achievements in science. Kornberg is currently professor emeritus of biochemistry at Stanford University. "Dr. Kornberg is an icon that represents what we hope to accomplish in this building: the pursuit of science that leads to new treatments and cures for diseases," said Jay Stein, senior vice president and vice provost for health affairs at the University, and CEO of the Medical Center and Strong Health. The new building will be named the Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building. At the ceremony announcing the naming of the building, Kornberg presented his Nobel Prize to the University. It will be permanently displayed in the lobby of the new building. The four-story, 240,000-square-foot building, located at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Lattimore Road, will open this fall.

Scientific Elite Come Out for Forum on Future of Science
Bruce Alberts, president of the National Academy of Sciences, says there are many opportunities for a future in science. In cooperation with two of Washington's most distinguished think tanks, the Brookings Institution and the American Enterprise Institute, the FASEB-sponsored forum titled "The Future of Biomedical Research" attracted about 150 distinguished members of the research policy community as well as members of Congress, their staff, and federal agency officials. The event was the first of its kind for FASEB and its success bodes well for the possibility of future similar ventures with some of Washington's major policy institutions: Congress and the think tanks. Some of the forum's highlights included presentations by NIH Director Harold Varmus, MD; Nobel Laureate Arthur Kornberg, MD; and AEI Abramson Fellow Clarisa Long, PhD. After reporting on the current state of research funding, Varmus described what he called the "nine long term issues that have bedeviled me in this job." Four of the issues related to research funding, including the need to stabilize research funding, the need to adapt to changes in health care reimbursement, how to insure the vitality of the research infrastructure, and how to promote the "sometimes frayed" set of intersections between government and academia. Varmus' other issues included how improve the public image of science; how to resolve conflicts between technology transfer and patent rights; how to improve the dividends of research dollars; how to better support allied disciplines like chemistry, math, physics and computer science; and how to convince Congress and the public that "dull" science has many benefits.

Nobel Prize Winners Seek Stronger Support for Basic Science
The American Institute of Physics Bulletin of Science
Policy News Number 101: June 26, 1996 The letter, dated June 19, follows: "Dear President Clinton and Members of Congress: "As men and women who have helped to shape the modern scientific age and who care deeply about the future of our nation, we urge you to reaffirm the fundamental role of the federal government in supporting basic scientific research. "Americans have been awarded more than one-half of all Nobel Prizes in physics, chemistry and medicine since 1945. This impressive success is no accident, but the result of a firm and consistent commitment by the federal government to basic science research at our universities. Our nation's policymakers and public have been prudent investors because their support has paid off in tremendous ways. "America's investment in research over the last fifty years has been a vital source of our economic and political strength around the world, as well as the quality of life Americans enjoy at home. The polio vaccine, computers, jet propulsion and disease resistant grains and vegetables are some of the thousands of advances pioneered at our universities that have had dramatic benefits for our health, economy, security and quality of life. "New and equally breathtaking advances may be just around the corner. Genetic research, for example, gives promise of better treatments for Alzheimer's, cancer and other diseases. Lighter and stronger composite materials may be developed with important applications in transportation, medicine and the military. Continuing support for university-based research will not only pave the way for these important breakthroughs, but will also train the next generation of pioneers and Nobelists.

National Institutes of Health (1942-1953), he helped elucidate the reactions leading to the formation of two important coenzymes: flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and diphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPN).
D. Conclusion
Professor Kornberg finds time to travel and lecture at many universities and research centers. He calls for a return of simple curiosity. He lectures that “ scientists need to be able to study science for curiosity’s sake and not be driven by the possible dollar benefits-and governments should encourage them.” He is adamant that research into science should proceed, despite public concerns that new discoveries, especially in genetic engineering, could be abused. “There is often a focus on the alarmist possibilities of any new technology; however it is foolish to try and predict where science will take us.” He states “ there hasn’t been a single instance of biotechnology being misapplied. It’s safer than driving.”
Professor Kornberg is a remarkable individual, and his devotion to his field of study is inspirational. His contributions have advanced medical knowledge. Medical knowledge needs to constantly advance because of the challenges of new problems- such as novel toxins and resistant organisms that are constantly arising. I believe that research is the lifeline to medicine; we should continue to question and search for answers.
