NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING BIOCHEMIST HEADLINES VET RESEARCH FORUM
COLLEGE STATION A biochemist and physician, Kornberg received the Nobel Prize in 1959 for his studies of the enzymes that assemble, repair and rearrange DNA. He will deliver the conference's keynote address at 1 p.m. Monday in room 201 of the Veterinary Medical Science building, when he will discuss "Inorganic Polyphosphate: A Molecular Fossil Come to Life." Inorganic polyphosphate is a substance found in the cells of almost all living things, and it appears to date from a time before life evolved. Kornberg believes it may have been a precursor of RNA and DNA. Recent research suggests it may be linked to the disease-causing ability of bacteria, including those responsible for ulcers, stomach cancer, pneumonia and meningitis. Kornberg will speak again at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the same room, when he will talk about "Science and Medicine at the Millennium." Organizers of the two-day forum say they hope to use the event to highlight the College of Veterinary Medicine's research activities. "We want to emphasize to the community that the college is involved in activities that reach far beyond training people to become veterinarians," says graduate student Caird Rexroad, forum coordinator.

LECTURE SERIES "THEIR OWN VOICES. THE HISTORY OF MODERN SCIENCE REFERRED BY ITS LEADING CHARACTERS" Lecture by Arthur Kornberg, 1959 Nobel of Medicine. MADRID, 18th SEPTEMBER 2000 Programme Arthur Kornberg -Brooklyn, New York, 1918- was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicene 1959 together with Dr. Severo Ochoa for Their discovery of the mechanisms in the biological synthesis of ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic acid. Kornberg, educated ar the University of Rochester, served for over ten years, (1942-53) as Commissined Oficcer in the U.S. Public Health Service. During this time he became a research investigator, working in the Departments of Chemistry and Pharmacology of New York Collage of Medicine, wiht Professor Severo Ochoa, in the Department of Biological Chemistry, Washington University Scholl of Medicine, and in the Department of Plant Biology, Universitu of California, Berkeley. From 1953 to 1959, Kornberg was Professor and Head of the Deparment of Microbiology in the Washington University Schioll of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri, and since 1959 he has been Professor and Executive Head of the Deparment of Biochemistry at Standord University School od Medicine. The special fields of interest to Professor Kornberg are biochemistry, specially enzyme chemistry anda synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).

STANFORD PHYSICIST WINS NOBEL
He Gets News Via Mickey Mouse Phone
Stanford's Robert C. Laughlin got the news he had won the Nobel Prize for physics in a particularly unscientific way - his13-year-old roused him after taking the 2 a.m. call on his Mickey Mouse telephone. "Hey, dad, there's some guy from Sweden who wants to talk to you," Laughlin said a few hours after he had been awakened early yesterday, recalling the wee-hours conversation with his son, Todd. The "guy" was calling to let Laughlin know that he, Horst L. Stormer of Germany and Daniel C. Tsui, a native of China who is now an American citizen, would share the $978,000 prize for their discoveries of how electrons interact to make the universe work as it does. At a news conference at Stanford, a beaming, tweed-jacketed Laughlin, his gray hair disheveled, accepted the applause and cheers of friends, family and co-workers, including two pervious Stanford Nobel lauriates. Laughlin, 47, tried to explain the significance of what he had accomplished, but his arcane lesson was met by a number of blank faces. He was asked if the discovery would have an impact on our everyday life.
