ISSN 1682-4156 (online version) ISSN 1682-4148 (print version) AUNG SAN SUU KYI AS A MODERN ASIAN LEADER Editorial AUNG SAN SUU KYI AS A MODERN ASIAN LEADER "1t is not the power that corrupts but fear. Fear of loosing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it." These are the words of today's most morally respected Asian leader, who despite a massive electoral victory(her party won 80 percent of the votes), lives in her country where she is the legitimate leader under house arrest. Youthful and beautiful Aung San Suu Kyi, who is also the winner of the 1991 Nobel peace prize, has become the symbol of freedom not only in Burma but in the rest of Asia too, where post independent period has produced many brutal, ruthless and corrupt rulers and regimes. The strength of Suu Kyi seems to lie in her genuine psychological and spiritual bond with the Burmese independence movement against the British, of which her father Aung San was the finest flower. Naturally, he is now Burma's foremost hero. Unlike most of the children of past generation of politicians in some neighboring countries, Sun Kyi did not have to wear a false mantel to find her place in present day politics. The independence struggle led by her father and the martyrdom of thirty two year old Aung San, together with his cabinet, in 1947 is written in the Burmese consciousness. A rare heritage in deed in Asian politics. His place in Asian history is like that of Thomas More in European history.

Indeed today is the Birthday of our National Leader. Today we celebrate her Birthday everywhere in- and outside Burma. However, celebrating outside Burma is much easier and less dangerous than doing that inside. Does it sound strange for you? Please let us draw your attention to who she is. Only then you will come to understand why we have to celebrate her Birthday in this way and why it is easier and less dangerous here. Wish you all the best, Aung San Suu Kyi Support Group. WHO IS AUNG SAN SUU KYI ? AUNG SAN SUU KYI is a symbol of hope and courage of Burmese people; a National Heroine awarded the Nobel Peace Price in 1991 for her leadership and sacrifice to restore Democracy, Human Rights, and the Rule of Law in her home land for the peoples of Burma. She was put under house arrest for six years from 1989 till 1995. The military controlled election was being held while she was put under house arrest and yet her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD) won over 82% of the votes. The military regime simply ignored the election result up until now. Aung San Suu Kyi is currently under virtual house arrest, constantly having been denied the freedom of giving speeches known as weekend forums in front of her residence in Rangoon, freedom to lead her political party (NLD), freedom to travel for campaigning, while her wagon was disconnected from the train when she tried to go to upper Burma one time, and her access to foreign journalists and the press was denied too. BURMA'S WOMEN'S DAY It proposed that June 19, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's birthday, be dedicated as Burma's Women's Day. Burma's Women's Day will acknowledge the essential role of women in Burma in the promotion of social justice, peace, human rights and democracy. It will honour the sacrifices made by millions of women who face military aggression, abuse, looting, murder, imprisonment, torture, attacks on their person and character, as well as attacks on their families and colleagues, because of their commitment to peace. Twenty active members of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's Pro-Democracy League were released from prison just hours after Tin Oo, one of the party's top leaders, was also freed. Both releases hopefully show relief of tensions and increased tolerance by rulers and the opposition.
A military-controlled court threw out a case against pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi by her estranged brother over her house, in which she lives basically under house arrest. The dismissal of the brother's suit suggests the government may want to leave the door open for talks with Daw Aung.
Briton James Mawdsley was released after serving a year of his 17-year sentence for distributing pro-democracy leaflets and publicly criticizing the Myanmar government. Following a campaign to get Mawdsley, 27, released, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said, "James's only crime was to highlight the suppression of ethnic minorities in Burma and to call for democratic change."
United Nations Special Envoy to Myanmar, Razali Ismail of Malaysia, and other U.N. officials met with pro-democracy activist Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at her home in Yangon, ending her two weeks in isolation under house arrest. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate's phone has been cut since September 22.

San Francisco Free Aung San Suu Kyi Demonstration San Francisco Free Burma activists and Burmese American Democratic Alliance (BADA) held a demonstration in San Francisco on December 8, 2001. It was held in support of the international Nobel Peace Laureate Campaign for Aung San Suu Kyi and the People of Burma. December, 2001 marks the 10th Anniversary of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's Nobel Peace Prize. The campaign calls Burmese military regime to: release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners; to stop all forms of Human Rights violations; and to agree to join Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, her party and ethnic nationalities for meaningful dialog. The demonstration was started at 1 PM and lasted two and a half hour until 3:30 PM. It was held at the corner of Market and Powel street in San Francisco. Activists from various organizations and Universities in San Francisco Bay Area participated the event. At 1:30 PM, our demonstration was in full swing. T Through out the demonstration, we were asked various questions about the event. One asked, "Who is Burma?" as he thought Burma is a person. Other one asked, "Is America doing something bad in Burma?" as he thought we were demonstration against American Government. In fact, most people do not quite understand what "Free Burma" means. May be we should write, "Help Burma overcome Dictatorship." Of course we had some encounters with very knowledgeable people too. Most of them were activists of their own or people from Burma's neighboring country such as Thailand. At one point, a man claimed that Aung San Suu Kyi came to United States few years ago, and went back with a lot of money. At first, we tried to argue with him, but then we realized that he is mentally unstable. Few rather funny moments during our two and a half hour long demonstration. We were happy doing what we can supporting this international campaign.

AUNG SAN SUU KYI

All Living Nobel Peace Laureates gather to honour Aung San Suu Kyi
On 8th December 2001 all living Nobel Peace Laureates will gather in Oslo to honour fellow Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, at an occasion which will mark the 10th anniversary of her own Peace award and the centennial anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize itself. Aung San Suu Kyi remains under house arrest in Burma.
The London event will be linked to the Oslo ceremony and to at least thirty other events organized by over one hundred non-governmental organizations around the globe through satellite and the internet.
The international show of support comes during a stalemate between the ruling military regime and the democratically elected leadership of Burma. The regime and Aung San Suu Kyi began informal talks just over one year ago. There has been little discernible progress in the situation since that time.
