Born in Buenos Aires, Carlos Saavedra Lamas Saavedra Lamas was a distinguished student at Lacordaire College and at the University of Buenos Aires where he received the Doctor of Laws degree in 1903, summa cum laude . After study in Paris and travel abroad, he accepted a professorship in law and constitutional history at the University of La Plata , where he began the teaching career that was to span more than forty years. Later, he inaugurated a course in sociology at the University of Buenos Aires, taught political economy and constitutional law in the Law School of the university, and eventually served as the president of the university. Saavedra Lamas, Carlos (b. Nov. 1, 1878, Buenos Aires, Arg.d. May 5, 1959, Buenos Aires), Argentine jurist who in 1936 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for his part in ending the Chaco War (1932-35), fought between Bolivia and Paraguay over the northern part of the Gran Chaco region and especially its oil fields. Educated in law, Saavedra Lamas taught at the National University of La Plata and at the University of Buenos Aires, of which he was rector from 1941 to 1943. In 1915 he became Argentinian minister of justice and of public education, and from 1932 to 1938 he served as minister of foreign affairs. Between October 1933 and June 1934 the United States, Italy, and 14 Latin-American nations signed an antiwar treaty prepared by Saavedra Lamas. He organized and presided over the international mediation committee (Brazil, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, and the United States) that secured an armistice (June 12, 1935) in the Chaco War. Subsequently he was prominent in negotiations resulting in a permanent peace agreement (July 21, 1938). Saavedra Lamas was president of the International Labour Congress, Geneva (1928); the Pan-American Conference, Buenos Aires (1936); and the League of Nations Assembly (1936). He also wrote several books on international law and peacekeeping, economics, and education.

C arlos Saavedra Lamas, una de las personalidades más destacadas de la cultura y la política argentina durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, fue el Primer Premio Nobel que tuvo nuestro país (aunque no en ciencias, dado que el galardón lo obtuvo por su labor diplomática en la solución de la Guerra del Chaco, durante la década del ´30). Saavedra Lamas nació en Buenos Aires en 1878. Se recibió de abogado en la Facultad de Derecho y Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, y luego, fue profesor de Derecho Público Provincial y de Historia Constitucional de Facultad de Ciencias Jurídicas y Sociales de la Universidad de La Plata; de Sociología en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UBA; de Finanzas; de Economía Política y de Derecho Constitucional, en la Facultad de Derecho y Ciencias Sociales, y titular de varias otras cátedras en distintas facultades de Buenos Aires. Entre 1941 y 1943, fue rector de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, y, entre 1952 y 1954, presidió la Academia de Derecho y Ciencias Sociales.
