Es la primera vez que un argentino logra esa alta distinción internacional. En Buenos Aires, se realiza una Conferencia para la Consolidación de la Paz, con asistencia del Presidente estadounidense, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, que por unos días se convierte en una figura popular. Luego, Gran Bretaña denuncia el pacto Roca-Runciman, que es reemplazado por el tratado Malbrán-Eden. Construcción del Obelisco En tanto, se crea por ley la Corporación de Transportes cuyo objeto es proteger a las compañías británicas de tranvías de la competencia de los colectivos. Buenos Aires vive un clima de fiesta al celebrarse el IV Centenario de su fundación por Pedro de Mendoza. Se inaugura la ampliación de la calle Corrientes y un discutido monumento que, con el tiempo, se convertirán en el símbolo de la ciudad: el Obelisco. Esta obra del arquitecto Alberto Prebisch despierta enconadas polémicas pero finalmente es aceptada por los porteños. El escándalo del año es la prórroga de la concesión de la CHADE y la CLADE, empresas que proveen de energía eléctrica a Buenos Aires y sus alrededores. La prórroga, por cuarenta años más, es votada por los concejales radicales y de otros partidos en medio de versiones sobre la existencia de coimas que habrían pagado ambas empresas. Durante los arduos debates sobre este tema que se desarrollan en la UCR es agredido a balazos el joven dirigente Arturo Frondizi. El visto bueno de Alvear a esta ordenanza suscita fuertes críticas de algunos de sus correligionarios, entre ellos los jóvenes integrantes de la agrupación FORJA.
