APRIL 1 - BIRTHS Alain Connes
(source)
Born 1 Apr 1947
French mathematician who won the Fields Medal in 1983 for his work in operator theory. His most remarkable contributions are (1) general classification and a structure theorem for factors of type III, obtained in his thesis (1973); (2) classification of automorphisms of the hyperfinite factor, which served as a preparation for the next contribution; (3) classification of injective factors; and (4) application of the theory of C*-algebras to foliations and differential geometry in general. Connes' recent work has been on noncommutative geometry and he has studied applications to theoretical physics. Claude Cohen-Tannoudji Born 1 Apr 1933
French physicist who shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1997 (with Steven Chu and William D. Phillips) for development of techniques that use laser light to cool atoms to extremely low temperatures, such that the slow moving atoms may be examined in detail. Early efforts at cooling had found that laser traps unfortunately also tend to agitate atoms causing them to move out of the beam. Cohen-Tannoudji proposed that laser traps operate by a process of what has since been called Sisyphus cooling. The laser beams, he argued, produce a series of standing waves of light polarized in different directions. As the atoms pass through the various fields their energy levels and thereby temperature is lowered.
