BLOOD GROUPS: THE HISTORY OF DISCOVERY,
IMPORTANCE FOR SCIENCE AND PRACTICE
Galyna Dyzyk
(Kyiv, Ukraine)
After a lot of failures in blood transfusion from man to man at the end of the 19th century some researchers supposed the existence of various types of blood. This supposition was confirmed on the border of centuries by Karl Landsteiner who opened the groups of blood.
Karl Landsteiner was born in 1868 in Vienna. He graduated from the Medical Faculty of Vienna University (1891), worked in Vienna institutes of hygiene and pathology. In 1911 he became a professor of Vienna University; from 1912 till 1939 he headed Rockfeller's Institute in New Yourk. In 1930 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his scientific researches in the field of immunology and for the discovery of blood groups. He died in 1943.
It was in 1900 that K. Landsteiner (who was then the assistent of the Vienna Institute of Pathology) took blood from himself and his five employees, separated serum from erythrocytes using a centrifuge and mixed separate samples of erythrocytes with the serum of different persons and with his own. According to the presence or absence of agglutination all the samples were divided into 3 groups: A, B and 0. Two years later A. Sturli and A. Decastello (Landsteiner's pupils) opened the fourth blood groop - AB. In 1911 isoserological system obtained the name of the AB0 system by the offer of L. Girschfeld.
Landsteiner noticed that the blood serum does not perform agglutination with its own erythocytes. He made a conclusion which is known as Landsteiner's indisputable rule: "In human organism the blood group antigen (agglutinogen) and antobodies to it (agglutinines) never co-exist".

Annotation by Joshua Lederberg:
KW: Nobel, diary entry; compare Landsteiner reaction.; see Peyton Rous' memoir on Landsteiner appended; [Obituary Notices of Fellows of The Royal Society 1945-1948 Vol.V Karl Landsteiner 1868-1943 by Peyton Rous page 307] The doubting habit never made Landsteiner a cynic, though now and again it found personal application. In 1930 the news that he had won the Nobel Prize was blared in all the afternoon papers and a shower of journalistic announcements, queries and comments came down upon him at the laboratory; yet this was wholly unconvincing to him. A friend who called at his home that evening to congratulate him found the family reading quietly, secure from telephone or radio, as if all unaware. And unaware his wife and son actually were, for Landsteiner had not mentioned the prize lest later they be disappointed concerning it.; jl 1/23/99; 2/14/99 4/19/00

Mythos (griechisch: Geschichte, sagenhafte Erzählung), religionsgeschichtlicher Begriff.
