Le physicien américain Edwin Hall aurait de quoi être fier de l'attribution du prix Nobel de physique 1998 à trois de ses fils spirituels, lui qui n'a pas pu recevoir le fameux prix pour la découverte de l'effet qui porte son nom, qui est déjà à la base d'un précédent Nobel. C'est en effet pour la découverte et l'explication, en 1982-83, d'une troisième version, connu sous le nom de l'"effet Hall quantique fractionnaire", que Daniel Tsui, Horst Stoermer et Robert B. Laughlin ont été primés par les jurés de l'Académie Royale des Sciences de Suède, ce mardi 13 octobre 1998. Störmer The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly to the German physicist Horst Ludwig Störmer and to two Americans: Daniel C. Tsui and Robert B. Laughlin. Electrons in new guises H. L. Störmer and D. C. Tsui made their discovery as early as 1982 in an experiment using extremely powerful magnetic fields and low temperatures. Within a year of the discovery R. B. Laughlin succeeded in explaining the experiment. Through theoretical analysis he showed that the electrons in a powerful magnetic field can condense to form a kind of quantum fluid related to the quantum fluids that occur in superconductivity and in liquid helium. What makes these fluids particularly important for researchers is that events in a drop of quantum fluid can provide more profound insights into the general inner structure and dynamics of matter. The contributions of the three laureates have thus led to yet another breakthrough in our understanding of quantum physics and to the development of new theoretical concepts of significance in many branches of modern physics. Quantum effects become visible As a young student in 1879, Edwin H. Hall had discovered an unexpected phenomenon: He found that if a thin gold plate is placed in a magnetic field at right angles to its surface, an electric current flowing along the plate can cause a potential drop at right angles both to the current and the magnetic field. Termed the Hall effect, this takes place because electrically charged particles (in this case electrons) moving in a magnetic field are influenced by a force and deflect laterally. Today, the Hall effect is used to determine the density of charge carriers in conductors and semi-conductors, and has become a standard tool in physics laboratories the world over.

Laughlin of Stanford, Horst L. Stormer of Columbia, and Daniel C. Tsui of Princeton for their work on the fractional quantum Hall effect, especially on how electrons operating under conditions of low temperatures and high magnetic fields can form into fractionally-charged ensembles. The Hall effect is named after Edwin Hall who in 1879 observed that electrons moving longitudinally along a metal strip (under the influence of an electric field) will, if also subject to a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the strip, be deflected toward the side of the strip. Because of this an excess of charge will build up one side of the strip. This Hall voltage is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. That is, a plot of Hall voltage (or equivalently the electrical resistance of the material to the sideways current flow) versus field strength would be linear. All of this can be explained in terms of classical physics.

Laughlin's Lab Work Wins Nobel for Physics
Robert B. Laughlin , a part-time Lab physicist, has won the 1998 Nobel Prize for Physics, along with Horst L. Stormer of Columbia and Daniel C. Tsui of Princeton, for work on the "fractional quantum Hall effect." Laughlin, now a professor at Stanford, worked in H Division in the early 1980s when he did seminal work on the subject. He continues to work at H Division part-time. Steve Libby, another Lab theoretical physicist and an expert on the fractional quantum Hall effect, called Laughlin's efforts "beautiful work...he had a wonderful idea and then pushed it all the way through magnificently, to a complete understanding, on his own." In today's State of the Lab address, Director Bruce Tarter extended "tremendous congratulations" to Laughlin, whom he described as an intellectually "provocative and stimulating" scientist. The fractional quantum Hall effect has to do with the behavior of electrons in a magnetic field at the interface between two semiconductors. The seminal theoretical work for the prize was Laughlin's 1983 paper in Physical Review Letters, written while he was still in H Division, in which he explained a phenomenon discovered by Stoermer and Tsui the year before.

Small Particles, Big Role in Nobel Prize for Physics
By Eugene Russo This year's winners of the Nobel Prize for physics collectively discovered and described a phenomenon that appears to defy common sense. Fewer notions could be so intuitively valid as the following: smaller things are generated by breaking bigger things apart. The world of physics usually bears this out: An atom, for example, divides into electrons, protons, and neutrons; a proton splits into quarks. But in 1982, Daniel Tsui , a professor of physics at Princeton University, and Horst Stormer , a professor of physics and applied physics at Columbia University and the adjunct director of physical sciences at Bell Laboratories' Physical Science Division in Murray Hill, N.J., observed the impossible. They were looking for something called the electron crystal, an as-yet-unproved theory that electrons will crystallize when placed in strong magnetic fields and low temperatures. In the process, they accidentally discovered that under these same conditions electrons will actually form fractional charges (so-called quasiparticles) by grouping together rather than by breaking apart.     MIT graduate Robert B. Laughlin PhD '79 shared the Nobel Prize in physics this week with two other researchers. Laughlin, a professor at Stanford University, shared the prize with Horst L. Störmer of Columbia University and Daniel C. Tsui of Princeton University for their work in discovering the fractional quantum Hall effect. The prize includes $978,000, which will be divided among the three recipients. Despite Laughlin's connection to MIT, it has been three years since an active member of the Institute has won a Nobel. In 1995, Professor of Chemistry Mario J. Molina shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his research on ozone depletion.
    Discoveries made a decade ago
    All three researchers were working at Bell Labs in 1982 when Störmer and Tsui discovered the effect. In 1983, Laughlin, then at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, provided the theoretical explanation of the effect in terms of fractionally charged particles. It was a "confluence of things from engineering that prepared me for understanding the fractional quantum Hall effect and coming up with an explanation," Laughlin said during a television interview at Stanford.
