2000 - Zhores I. ALFEROV ( russo ), Herbert KROEMER ( americano ) e Jack S. KILBY ( americano )

he University of California is reshaping educational opportunities in California by providing unparalleled educational expertise, and considerable resources, and acting as a catalyst for mobilizing groups and institutions. "We are proposing to improve educational experience and preparation of K-12 students on a scale and scope never attempted before," says President Atkinson. "This is an extraordinarily ambitious goal, but if there is any state in the Union that can succeed, it is California." Richard A. Clarke, retired CEO of Pacific Gas and Electric Co., co-chairman of the Outreach Task Force and a UC Berkeley alumnus, said, "The University of California is a leader in the world so it's only appropriate for the University to be on the cutting edge in student outreach." The University of California has unparalleled strengths in teaching, research and public service. Now, UC's sweeping and audacious effort to bring its educational programs to bright young people from all backgrounds means the University will play an even more central role in ensuring that the United States continues to lead an increasingly competitive world.
UC San Diego is planning to open an innovative model school, one of several major new initiatives to broaden its involvement in K-12 education. A primary goal of the school, to be operated jointly with the San Diego Unified School District, will be to enable students from educationally disadvantaged schools to qualify for admission to UCSD and similar universities.

Title: EFFECT OF 1/f NOISE ON DECOHERENCE, QUANTUM PHASE TRANSITIONS, AND QUANTUM COMPUTING We argue that non-equilibrium 1/f noise severely limits the quantum coherence time for electrons in condensed matter systems. This has fundamental implications for transport in mesoscopic systems, for quantum phase transitions and for quantum computing. We present an experimental measurement of 1/f noise in a mesoscopic charge pump and show that this provides a semi-quantitative explanation of the puzzling saturation of the coherence time widely observed in metallic films and wires at low temperatures. The Nobel Foundation of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Nobel Prizes last week in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology and medicine, literature, peace, and economics. The Nobel Prize in physics was awarded jointly to Professor Robert B. Laughlin of Stanford University, Professor Horst L. Stormer of Columbia University, and Professor Daniel C. Tsui of Princeton University. These three researchers discovered that electrons acting together in a strong magnetic field can form new types of particles with charges that are only fractions of electron charges. Stormer was born in 1949 in Germany and worked at Bell Laboratories from 1992-98, before moving to Columbia University in 1998. Tsui was born in Henan, China. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and has been a professor at Princeton since 1982. Stormer and Tsui made the discovery in 1982, and Laughlin, who received his Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979, was the first to explain their findings. Laughlin has worked at Stanford since 1989. The Academy awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry to Walter Kohn of the University of California at Santa Barbara and John A. Pople of Northwestern University, citing their achievements in the development of "computational methods in quantum chemistry." (

78. Metanews: The Fractional Quantum Reportorial Effect
A year later, theoretical physicist robert B. laughlin of Stanford University explainedStormer and Tsui's Stormer, Tsui, and laughlin shared the nobel.
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/21stC/issue-3.4/hart.html
After the Nobel,
the fractional quantum reportorial effect
A Nobel prize might seem to mark the end of the struggle to explain even the most arcane experiment in quantum physics. After all, physicists worldwide have understood and applauded the work. But then you have to explain the research to reporters. "Just the physical phenomenon itself is very hard to describe to reporters, and then it's very hard to describe by reporters to the layman," says Columbia professor of physics and applied physics Horst L. Stormer , one of three researchers sharing the 1998 physics Nobel. Stormer also holds an appointment as Adjunct Physics Director at Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey. The strange world of quantum mechanics proves difficult to explain, even for Stormer. "Everybody's struggling with it, including the scientists," he says. Stormer and fellow experimentalist Daniel C. Tsui , a Princeton physicist, performed the prize winning work at Bell Labs in 1982. Their work followed up on experiments begun in 1879, when American physicist Edwin H. Hall showed that a magnetic field applied across a thin metal plate produced a measurable electrical potential. In a 1980 refinement, German physicist Klaus von Klitzing found that smoothly increasing the strength of the field produced stepwise increases in the potential. Electrons seemed to be moving as units, or quanta, consistent with their single negative charge. Klitzing won the 1985 Nobel in Physics for demonstrating this integer quantum Hall effect.
