Robert Oppenheimer gathered in Los Alamos to begin the Manhattan Project, the secret mission to develop the atomic bomb that would end World War II. Heilbron Office for History of Science and Technology, UC Berkeley Lawrence and Fermi: A Joint Centennial Ernest Lawrence and Enrico Fermi, both born in 1901, were dominant figures in nuclear physics for a decade or so on either side of World War II. The lecture traces their friendly competition during the 1930s, their parallel work in the Manhattan project, and their divergent postwar paths to their untimely deaths in the 1950s. Wolfgang K. H. Panofsky Stanford Linear Accelerator Center Remembrances of Ernest O. Lawrence and His Laboratory After World War II The talk will cover the creative period at the University of California Radiation Laboratory immediately after the end of World War II. The speaker will briefly cover some personal experiences during work on the linear accelerator, the synchrotron, and the synchrocyclotron, and also the beginning of the work of the MTA at Livermore. Nobel Prize Centennial 1901-2001 University of Chicago News: Resources University of Chicago Nobel Laureates Seventy-four Nobel Laureates have been faculty members, students or researchers at the University of Chicago at some point in their careers. Eleven have won the Nobel Prize in the last decade alone. Of the 74 Laureates, 25 have won in Physics , 22 in Economic Sciences , 14 in Chemistry , 11 in Physiology or Medicine and two in Literature Michelson was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in any of the sciences.
