Laxness, Halldor Kiljan The Weaver of Cashmere (1927) expressed his disillusionment with Christianity. His sympathies turned toward socialism and communism; these philosophies are reflected in his later novels. Salka Valka (1931-32, tr. 1936), Independent People (1934-35, tr. 1945-46), and The Light of the World (1937-40, tr. 1969) deal with Icelandic peasant life and describe an endless search for independence. Written in the great narrative tradition of the epics, his novels set a new style for modern Icelandic literature and were often the focus of bitter controversy. His later works include Paradise Reclaimed (tr. 1962). Laxness received the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature. See studies by Peter Hallberg (1971, repr. 1982).

    Halldor Laxness
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Halldór Kiljan Laxness ) was a famous 20th century Icelandic author. Laxness started to lean towards socialism after having visited to the United States to try to make films. This is evident in his book Atom Station , about the fight of some ordinary people to find a place in a new Iceland controlled by the cold war invasion of an American bomber base into the hearts and minds of the politicians. It is told from the point of view of a poor country woman who moves to the city, finds work as a maid for one of said politicians, and who somehow sees the folly of the whole thing, and who campaigns for what she sees as a bigger priority, social welfare from the government. Independent People is sort of deadpan tragedy. It is basically the story of a man's life from just after he escapes his virtual enslavement to a local rural family on a remote end of Iceland, up through his attempts to build a family, a home, and a future for himself. However, from reading it, it is never explicitly stated that the setting is a remote part of iceland. The reader only knows what the character thinks about it; and as far as he is concerned, it is a good plot of land. It is all he's ever known, he hasn't wandered in his mind to

    Synopsis
An engrossing and humane modern classic, imbued with the lyrical force of medieval ballads and Nordic myth. Bjartus is a sheep farmer hewing a living from a blighted patch of land in Iceland. After 18 years of servitude to a master he despises, all he wants is to raise his flocks unbeholden to anyone. Nothing, not inclement weather, not his wives, not his family will come between him and his goal of financial independence. Only Asta Solillja, the child he brings up as his daughter, can pierce his stubborn heart. But she too wishes to live independently - and when Bjartus throws her from the house on discovering she is pregnant, her more temperate determination is set against his stony will.

Contrary to popular belief, the sole intent of this website is not to establish my own idiosyncratic hegemony over the reading tastes of friends and family, nor simply to provide a forum for my own peculiar opinions and views. Those are simply the side benefits. The real purpose of Brothers Judd is to point folks in the direction of books that they will enjoy. One of the abiding disappointments of all this is that there are books that I wish everyone had read, but nothing I can ever say will get most of you to read them. This book is assuredly a case in point. The greatest novel of Iceland's greatest novelist (I somehow feel assured that I can say that without threat of contradiction) and only Nobel Prize winner, Independent People tells the epic story of Bjartur of Summerhouses, an Icelandic sheep farmer who lives in a turf croft. See, I've lost you already. But I swear to you, this is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. Bjartur, this simple farmer who it is difficult to even place in time, is one of the authentic heroes in all of literature and he enunciates one of the most moving universal messages imaginable: "To stand alone, is not that the perfection of life, its aim?"

Laxness, Halldor Kiljan Halldor Kiljan Laxness was born in 1902 in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, but spent his youth in the country. From the age of seventeen on, he travelled and lived abroad, chiefly on the European continent. He was influenced by expressionism and other modern currents in Germany and France. In the mid-twenties he was converted to Catholicism; his spiritual experiences are reflected in several books of an autobiographical nature, chiefly Undir Helgahnuk (Under the Holy Mountain), 1924. In 1927, he published his first important novel, Vefarinn mikli fra Kasmir (The Great Weaver from Kashmir). Laxness's religious period did not last long; during a visit to America he became attracted to socialism. Althydubokin (The Book of the People), 1929, is evidence of a change toward a socialist outlook. In 1930, Laxness settled in Iceland.
Laxness's main achievement consists of three novel cycles written during the thirties, dealing with the people of Iceland. Pu vinvidur hreini, 1931, and Fuglinn i fjorunni, 1932, (both translated as Salka Valka), tell the story of a poor fisher girl; Sjalfstaettfolk (Independent People), 1934-35, treats the fortunes of small farmers, whereas the tetralogy Ljos heimsins (The Light of the World), 1937-40, has as its hero an Icelandic folk poet. Laxness's later works are frequently historical and influenced by the saga tradition: Islandsklukkan (The Bell of Iceland), 1943-46, Gerpla (The Happy Warriors), 1952, and Paradisarheimat (Paradise Reclaimed), 1960. Laxness is also the author of the topical and sharply polemical Atomstodin (The Atom Station), 1948.
