Nobel Lecture , December 11, 1963
The Red Cross in a Changing World
To this hall tonight have been invited men and women representative of the four corners of our world. Each person present has rendered some service to the cause of peace. Such an undertaking imposes humility and suggests that we speak simply to this world forum about the common purpose that concerns us all. Goodwill is often inarticulate. Fortunately, we are blessed with individuals and organizations to express the longings of little peoples in all lands. The gift of great and continuing institutions is a splendid gift. We are "inheritors of a tradition", and in our hands is responsibility that the lustre does not dim, nor the shadow shrink. Before making any reference to the League of Red Cross Societies, I would like to speak in the highest terms of the work which has been done for the past one hundred years by the International Committee of the Red Cross and for the work it continues to carry on ever with increased fervor. The International Committee is that great body of Swiss citizens which acts as intermediary between belligerents in the time of war, and as arbitrators of disputes in time of peace. To quote Mr. Boissier, president of the International Committee, at the inauguration ceremony

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies,
original name LEAGUE OF RED CROSS SOCIETIES, also called (1983-91) LEAGUE OF RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT SOCIETIES, international organization responsible for encouraging the formation of and aiding national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. The federation shared the Nobel Prize for Peace with the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1963; at the time its name was the League of Red Cross Societies. The league was founded in 1919 in response to the immense scope of activities by various national Red Cross societies; an organization was needed to serve as a liaison between the societies so that they could work together. In 1983 this organization's name was changed to the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in response to the use of Red Crescent in Muslim countries. The name was changed again, in 1991, to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The main goal of the federation is to facilitate the humanitarian activities of national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in nonconflict areas; the organization thus focuses its efforts on victims of natural and man-made disasters such as famine or hurricanes. The federation also encourages and assists nations to establish Red Cross and Red Crescent societies.

- History Achievements Principles Structure The Irish Red Cross Society is proud of its own unique history and its membership of one of the oldest extant humanitarian organisations in the world. The Red Cross has the largest membership of any such voluntary body, numbering over 100 million members in 170 different National Societies and has won the Nobel Prize for Peace a stunning four times starting with its founder, Henri Dunant, in 1901. For further information on the Red Cross Movement check the websites of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) at www.ifrc.org and the International Committee of the Red Cross at www.icrc.org
History of the Red Cross
The Red Cross Movement, with over 100 million members worldwide, is the largest humanitarian aid organisation in the world today. It was founded by Swiss business man, Henri Dunant, following the battle of Solferino, northern Italy, in 1859 which resulted in over 40,000 dead or wounded. Dunant found himself in the middle of the battle between the French forces of Emperor, Napoleon III and the Austro-Hungarian Empire which occupied parts of Italy at that time. Horrified by the anguished cries of the war-wounded left to suffer and die on the battlefield, many of whom pleaded for the coup de grace, Dunant organised help from the nearest village, Solferino. The wounded, from both sides were ferried to makeshift hospitals in people's homes and barns.

Four Nobel Peace Prizes
The four Nobel Peace Prizes awarded to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, are a world recognition of its activities, its principles and guiding ideals.
The First Nobel Peace Prize, 1901, was awarded to Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross, who devoted his life to humanity and to alleviating human suffering. The International Committee of the Red Cross received three times the Nobel Peace Prize, i.e. in 1917 and 1944, in recognition of its humanitarian activities during the two world wars, and again in 1963, together with the League (now International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) on the occasion of the centenary of the Movement.

Nobel Peace Prize
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel Prizes bequested by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel . Four of the five prizes are awarded in Stockholm each year, but Nobel had stipulated in his will that the Peace Prize could not be awarded in Sweden. Instead the Norwegian capital of Oslo was chosen as the award site and a Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee is appointed to select the laureate for the Peace Prize. According to the will of Alfred Nobel the prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

The Red Cross, a strictly neutral and impartial worldwide organization is dedicated to humanitarian interests in general and to alleviating human suffering in particular, is composed of three basic elements.
I. The self-governing National Red Cross Societies, including the Red Crescent (in Muslim countries) and the Red Lion and Sun (in Iran), operate on the national level through their volunteer members, although they also participate in international work. Each must be recognized by the International Committee. Today numbering 114, these societies all have Junior Red Cross Societies as well. Virtually all have disaster relief programs, and many carry on welfare programs, with community health and safety instruction, and so on. Since World War II, many of the European and Asian societies have also established refugee services. 2. The League of Red Cross Societies, a coordinating world federation of these societies, was established in 1919 as the result of proposals made by Henry P. Davison (1867-1922) of the American Red Cross. The League maintains contacts between the societies; acts as a clearinghouse for information; assists the societies in setting up new programs and in improving or expanding old ones; coordinates international disaster operations. It functions under an executive committee and a board of governors on which every national society has representation.
