About the ICRC ICRC Activities The ICRC worldwide Focus ... 1995 - No. 307 International Review of the Red Cross no 307, p.427-446 by François Bugnion The composition of the International Committee of the Red Cross François Bugnion , Arts graduate and Doctor of Political Science, entered the service of the ICRC in 1970. He served the institution in Israel and the occupied territories (1970-1972), in Bangladesh (1973-1974) and more briefly in Turkey and Cyprus (1974), Chad (1978), Viet Nam and Cambodia (1979). Since 1989, he has been Deputy Director of the ICRC Department for Principles, Law and Relations with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. He is the author of: Le Comité international de la Croix-Rouge et la protection des victimes de la guerre (ICRC, Geneva, 1994).
"I know of no part of jurisprudence or of the humanities to which the institution calling itself the Geneva Committee can be connected", declared the renowned Russian jurist Fiodor Fiodorovitch de Martens, legal adviser to the Imperial Russian Government, at the Fourth International Conference of Red Cross Societies held in Karlsruhe in September 1887.[1]
No wonder he was puzzled, for although the International Committee is an international institution by reason of its activities and duties, its composition is still that of a private association under Swiss law.

Investor Relations Media NewsRoom Economics ... Compliments / Complaints Royal Bank Letter To Red Cross the people of the world are divided into those who are fortunate enough to be able to give help and those who need help. It has been so for a hundred years, and today more than three million Canadian members are dedicated to assisting victims of war, disaster, disease, famine and misfortune of many kinds. Because of the very magnitude of its work and the great number of its activities, the image of Red Cross tends to become blurred. Its hundredth birthday seems to be a good time to bring the picture back into focus. How it started The Red Cross owes its origin, says the Harmsworth Encyclopaedia Henri Dunant, of Geneva, was nearby on that June day. He worked alone among the wounded in the church at Castiglione for hours, but was unable to keep up with the flow of men with damaged bodies. He went out into the streets and got together a group of women to work with him. Three years later, in 1862, Dunant published a little book

The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 ‹ The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

OPINION 50 Years of Geneva Conventions (Keynote address given at the function to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions at Karachi on Wednesday, September 15, 1999) PATRON Lt Gen (Retd) SARDAR FS LODI reproduces his keynote address on GENEVA CONVENTIONS with thanks L adies and gentlemen we are assembled here today to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions. These Conventions are the bedrock on which is based the International Humanitarian Law. These are the most important international instruments to defend human dignity in war and are among the most widely ratified treaties. Today virtually all the countries in the world including Pakistan are signatories to the Geneva Conventions. The purpose of International Humanitarian Law is to limit human suffering in times of armed conflict and to prevent atrocities. There are four Geneva Conventions of 1949. The first provides protection to the wounded and sick members of the armed forces on land. The second provides protection to the wounded, sick and shipwrecked members of the armed forces at sea. The third provides protection to the prisoners of war and the fourth to civilians. There are two Additional Protocols of 1977 which supplement the Conventions. It is worth reminding ourselves today that all those countries who are a party to the Conventions have pledged to respect all civilians and soldiers who can no longer fight without any adverse distinction founded on race, colour, religion or faith, sex, birth or wealth, or any other similar criteria. These countries have further pledged to prohibit torture, inhuman or degrading treatment, the taking of hostages, mass extermination, summary executions, deportations, pillage and wanton destruction of private property. Finally all these countries have authorized delegates from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to visit prisoners of war and civilian internees, and to speak with them in private. The ICRC is the organisation which has the task of implementing the terms of the Geneva Conventions signed on August 12, 1949.
