Joshua Lederberg was born in Montclair, N.J. on May 23,1925. He was brought up in the Washington Heights District of Upper Manhattan, New York City, where he received his education in Public School 46, Junior High School 164 and Stuyvesant High School . From 1941 to 1944 he studied at Columbia College , where he obtained his B.A. with honours in Zoology (premedical course), and from 1944 to 1946 at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University Medical School . Here he carried out part-time research with Professor F.J. Ryan in the Department of Zoology. Lederberg's research was influenced by the scientific findings of Dr. Oswald Avery, another pioneer geneticist, (whose papers are already electronically housed in Profiles in Science Lederberg won the Nobel Prize in Medicine at age 33 for scientific work started at age 20, which showed that bacteria can in fact, reproduce through sexual recombination. Although Lederberg was "astonished" to receive the prize, his diary entry for October 26, 1958, the day he heard he had won it, also records some of his fears: "On the whole I'm a little afraid the fuss and bother more than outweigh the egotistic satisfactions, the cash and the prestige factors that might help in getting my lab going." "It seems there was never any doubt that Joshua Lederberg wanted to be a scientist," said Dr. Alexa McCray, who directs the Profiles in Science project. "By age 7 he had already written a short essay on his scientific dreams." In the two-sentence essay, written in slanting longhand, he says, "I would like to be a scientistist of mathemmatics like Einstein. I would study science and discover a few theories in science." By 12 years of age he was reading biochemistry and medical textbooks and his teachers allowed him to sit at the back of the class room quietly studying as they couldn't answer many of his questions.

At age seven he succinctly expressed this desire in a short essay in smudged blue ink on school-lined paper: "I would like to be a scientist of mathematics like Einstein. I would study science and discover a few theories of science." This piece of early writing can be seen at a small exhibit at the National Library of Medicine on the life and work of Joshua Lederberg. The exhibit coincides with his 75th birthday. Other items on display include pages from a lab notebook, Lederberg's high school microscope, his Nobel medal and diploma, letters, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The exhibit will be up through November 30. Although Lederberg chose the biological sciences over mathematics, he never wavered in his commitment or desire to be a scientist. During World War II he wrote to a friend, "...the laboratory is more than just a dull place where you wash test tubes. There, and not on the dance floor, drill field, or battleground I'm at my best." Tatum ) for discovering the mechanisms of genetic recombination in bacteria. Lederberg studied under Tatum at Yale (Ph.D., 1948) and taught at the University of Wisconsin (1947-59), where he established a department of medical genetics. In 1959 he joined the faculty of the Stanford Medical School, serving as director of the Kennedy Laboratories of Molecular Medicine there from 1962 to 1978, when he moved to New York City to become president of Rockefeller University. He held that post until 1990.
