Lederberg, Joshua (1925- )
American geneticist at Stanford University who received the 1958 Nobel Prize for Medicine. In 1958, while at the University of Wisconsin (where he was chairman of the medical genetics department), he was the first to raise the issue of biological contamination by space missions. He was subsequently appointed chairman of WESTEX and then of the Space Science Board 's Committee 14 on Exobiology . In 1960, Lederberg introduced the term " exobiology and in 1961 was among the group of researchers who attended the first SETI conference at Green Bank

Joshua Lederberg, PhD, Nobel Laureate A member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1957, and a charter member of its Institute of Medicine, Dr. Lederberg has been active on many government advisory committees and boards, such as NIH study sections and the National Advisory Mental Health Council, and has served as Chairman of the President's Cancer Panel. Most recently he has chaired the iom's and several other studies of the problems of Emerging Infections. In recent years, he has been particularly active as a consultant in national security affairs, and has served on such bodies as the Defense Science Board, the CNO Executive Panel, the Intelligence Community's Proliferation Policy panels, and the Commission on Integrated Long Range Strategy, with particular concern for problems of biological weapons proliferation. Since 1972, when he served as adviser to the US delegation at the UN Committee on Disarmament in Geneva during the negotiation of the Biological Weapons Convention, he has been particularly concerned with arms control and other preventive and defensive measures. Dr. Lederberg has been awarded numerous honorary Doctor of Science, M.D. and Dr. Mil. Med. degrees as well as a Foreign Membership of the Royal Society, London. In October 1989 he received the National Medal of Science, the citation for which made particular reference to his work as a consultant to government.

    TODAY'S SCIENTIFIC CULTURE often overlooks a principle that is both paradox and common sense: You rarely find the most important things by deliberately looking for them. The obvious remedy would be to foster serendipity, but serendipity means more than the good luck of accidental discovery. As Louis Pasteur said, "Chance favors the prepared mind," and the prepared mind requires unfettered opportunity to recognize and follow unplanned paths. Even if we set a goal and succeed in accomplishing it, that's not the way we work revolutions. But when we pursue our passion to master what was once unknowable, we move from a plodding struggle with nature to an ongoing, enlightening conversation. We also then stumble upon the kind of advances that repeatedly justify society's great investment in science. Ryan took a callow underclassman

    Lederberg, Joshua
    He was born in Montclair, N.J. on May 23,1925. He was brought up in the Washington Heights District of Upper Manhattan, New York City, where he received his education in Public School 46, Junior High School 164 and Stuyvesant High School. From 1941 to 1944 he studied at Columbia College, where he obtained his B.A. with honours in Zoology (premedical course), and from 1944 to 1946 at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University Medical School. Here he carried out part-time research with Professor F. J. Ryan in the Department of Zoology. Subsequently he went to the Department of Microbiology and Botany at Yale University, New Haven, Conn., as Research Fellow of the Jane Coffin Childs Fund for Medical Research and, during 1946-1947, as a graduate student with Professor E. L. Tatum. He was awarded his Ph.D. degree in 1948.
    In 1947, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Genetics at the University of Wisconsin, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1950 and Professor in 1954. He organized the Department of Medical Genetics in 1957, of which he was Chairman during 1957-1958.

    Lederberg, Joshua 1925-, American geneticist, b. Montclair, N.J., grad. Columbia, 1944, Ph.D. Yale, 1948. He is known for his studies of the genetic mechanisms of bacteria. He shared with G. W. Beadle and E. L. Tatum the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for establishing that sexual recombination occurs in bacteria. Lederberg showed that although bacteria reproduce only by dividing, they are able to effect sexual recombination by processes that result in exchange of genetic material between different bacteria. In 1978, he joined Rockefeller Univ.; where he served as president until 1990.

    American Association for the Advancement of Science before the Committee on the Judiciary U.S. House of Representatives 18 March 1999 Testimony Joshua Lederberg President-emeritus Rockefeller University 18 March 1999 Introduction My name is Joshua Lederberg. I have been asked to testify on behalf of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine (the "Academies"), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). As you know, the three Academies were chartered by Congress to provide advice to the federal government and to the nation on scientific, technical, and medical issues. The AAAS is the umbrella organization for over 250 professional scientific and engineering societies in the United States, with more than 140,000 individual members. I was elected as member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1957 and am a charter member of the Institute of Medicine. I also am Fellow of the AAAS. My biographical summary is attached at the end of this statement. I would like to make several points in this testimony:
    • Access to factual data is essential to furthering our understanding of nature, to medical and technical progress, and to the validation of scientific claims. The essence of the scientific method is relentless critical discourse; without it, the authenticity of knowledge claims rapidly deteriorates. Indeed, a thriving public domain for data, fostered by government policies that guarantee full and open access to data, benefits all downstream users, including the commercial database industry.

    Joshua Lederberg Pioneer of microbial genetics: Joshua Lederberg (1925-) by King-Thom Chung, Department of Biology, The University of Memphis Joshua Lederberg was awarded the 1958 Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology for his discovery of "sexual recombination" in bacteria (bacterial conjugation). This award was shared with Drs. George Wells Beadle (1903-1989) (1) and Edward Lawrie Tatum (1909-1975) (3). Conjugation is mediated by the presence of the F+ factor (fertility factor or plasmid) and requires cell to cell contact. The plasmid can reside inside the donor bacterium as an extrachromosomal element with its own origin of replication or it can be integrated into the bacterial chromosome. When integrated in the chromosome, replicative transfer begins within the F plasmid region at the oriT region and continues into the chromosomal region. Thus the chromosomal genes as well as F plasmid genes are transferred to the recipient cell during conjugation. Via a process of recombination ( Hfr and coined the term plasmid in 1950 to describe extrachromosomal genetic elements. However, the term was not widely accepted until the 1970s when bacterial drug resistance was shown to be mediated by self-transmissible plasmids and became a major medical problem.

      MR. BERGER: Good morning to all of you and welcome. Let me thank you all for coming. Let me acknowledge in particular Dr. Bruce Alberts, President of the National Academy of Sciences; Dr. William Wulf, President of the National Academy of Engineering; and Dr. Kenneth Shine, President of the National Academy of Medicine. We are here to discuss emerging threats to America's security as we reach a new century. How do we respond to the threat of terrorists around the world, turning from bullets and bombs to even more insidious and potent weapons? What if they and the rogue states that sponsor them try to attack the critical computer systems that drive our society? What if they seek to use chemical, biological, even nuclear weapons? The United States must deal with these emerging threats now, so that the instruments of prevention develop at least as rapidly as the instruments of disruption. Today we are confronting these challenges with an extraordinary team of dedicated professionals across our government with law enforcement efforts headed by Attorney General Reno and FBI Director Freeh; with strong diplomacy backed by a strong defense under Secretary of State Albright and Secretary of Defense Cohen; with better intelligence under the direction of Director Tenet; and determined efforts to contain weapons proliferation under Energy Secretary Richardson; with emergency management under FEMA Director Witt; private industry cooperation directed by Secretary Daley; and aviation security under Transportation Secretary Slater; and with public health and management and medical research guided by Health and Human Services Secretary Shalala who probably did not think she was going to be part of the national security team when she became Secretary of HHS.

    The National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine (NLM) has announced the release of the private research papers of one of the 20th century’s most notable scientists—Dr. Joshua Lederberg. The papers have been added to NLM’s new Web site, Profiles in Science (http://www.profiles.nlm.nih.gov) “Joshua Lederberg is a seminal figure in the world of molecular biology, and he has deservedly earned the sobriquet, ‘father of molecular genetics,’” said Donald Lindberg, NLM’s director. Lederberg’s research was influenced by the scientific findings of Oswald Avery, another pioneer geneticist, whose papers are already electronically housed in Profiles in Science. Lederberg won the Nobel Prize in Medicine at age 33 for scientific work started at age 20, which showed that bacteria can, in fact, reproduce through sexual recombination. After winning the Nobel Prize, Lederberg continued to make creative discoveries. He became interested in computers in the late 1940s and collaborated with Stanford University computer scientists in the mid-1960s in the development of DENDRAL, one of the first “expert” or “knowledge-based” systems. He was also involved with artificial intelligence and was very interested in the dissemination of scientific knowledge via electronic networks. Lederberg also took a keen interest in the search for life on other planets and coined the term “exobiology,” the study of life outside the atmosphere. He was concerned that future space flights from Earth could inadvertently contaminate and ruin bacterial ecosystems in outer space.

    Joshua Lederberg, Nobel laureate and former president of Rockefeller University, will address students, faculty, administration and guests at the 233rd Opening Convocation of Brown University, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, on The College Green.
    PROVIDENCE, R.I. Joshua Lederberg, Nobel laureate and former president of Rockefeller University, will address students, faculty, administration and guests at the 233rd Opening Convocation of Brown University. The convocation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, on The College Green (rain site: Meehan Auditorium) and is open to the public without charge. Lederberg's address is titled "In Praise of Ignorance: Science Challenges the Young." Opening Convocation is one of two ceremonies each year for which the University opens its ceremonial Van Wickle Gates. The Gates, on Prospect Street at the top of College Hill, will open inward, admitting nearly 1,500 members of the Class of 2000, among the largest entering classes in the University's history. (The Gates will open outward in May to mark the departure of the graduating Class of 1997). An academic procession of students, faculty and administrators will march through to The College Green, where Vartan Gregorian, Brown's 16th president, will declare the academic year open, welcome the new class and introduce the speaker.

    It is the Swedish- Norwegian foundation ( which is situated in Stockholm). It was founded in 1900 year like a fulfillment of the wish of Alfred Nobel's testament. All income of this foundation is devoted to grant of equal-value international prize. They are awarded every year in five domains:
    in the realms of physics and chemistry the prizes are granted by Royal Swedish Academy of Science
    in the realm of medicine the prize is granted by Royal Swedish Institute of Medicine and Surgery.
    in the realm of literature the prize is granted by Swedish Academy of Literature in the realm of economy the prize is granted by Swedish Bank - for activity for the world-wide peace is granted by Norwegian Nobel's Committee (attached to Norwegian Parliament. These awards are granted in Stockholm and Oslo on 10th December (it is the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death).
