SCIENCE Introduction Dr. Chen Ning Yang Dr. Tsung Dao Lee Dr. Steven Chu ... Samuel C.C. Ting INTRODUCTION All the way to the earlier time of this century, the most important and successful thing the Chinese have contributed to the U.S. society was the railroad. Now, in 1998, we can tell you that Chinese have done a lot besides the railroad building. One of the things we are so proud of is a number of famous scientists have discovered a lot to help our society. All these successful Chinese American scientists share one common point. It is that they are all proud to be Chinese and they have tried their best to contribute something to their second mother, that is America. Their inventions shocked the whole world. Let's hear some of their stories. Dr. Chen Ning Yang : Chen Ning Yang, Nobel Prize recipient and Director of the Theoretical Physics Department at State University of New York at Stony Book, is the 1992 Roy E. Moon Distinguished Lecturer in Science at Angelo State University. He is among the word's foremost theoretical physicists and mathematicians and is known for his work on elementary particles.

Chen Ning Yang
Chen Ning Yang was born on September 22, 1922, in Hofei, Anhwei, China. After reading the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, he was inspired and adopted "Franklin' as his first name. In 1929, his family moved to Peiping, but in later years they had to move again to stay out of the way of the Japanese invaders. After obtaining his bachelor's degree in 1942 at National Southwest University in Kunming, he entered Tsinghua University. In 1944, he completed his master's degree and taught at a Chinese high school. He completed his doctorate at the University of Chicago in 1946. In 1949, Yang went to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and he became one of the very small number of professors on appointed Albert Einstein professor of physics and director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Chen Ning Yang shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Tsung Dao Lee in 1957. Yang and Tsung Dao Lee made a fundamental theoretical breakthrough of non-conservation of parity. Because of the their work, all science theories based on parity had to be reexamined. They were the first scientists of Chinese birth to win a Nobel Prize. They were also among the youngest men ever to receive a Nobel award. They obtained the shortest time interval ever between a discovery and the award of the Nobel Prize. Yang married Chih Li Tu. She was a former student of his in China. They had two sons and one daughter together. He became and American citizen in 1964. Because Yang was born in China and was an exceptional scientist who won the Nobel Prize, the Communist Chines Embassy in Sweden make some effort to return Yang back to China. However, he refused to go back. In his acceptance speech, Yang left no doubt that he would remain in the United States because of his devotion to modern science, he believed, is primarily of western origin.

Dernier hommage au grand physicien Wu Ta- you

Physics Lee, Tsung Dao Lee, Tsung Dao (November 24, 1926 - ; China) Tsung Dao Lee is a noted Chinese-born American physicist who has been credited with making substantial contributions to the fields of elementary particles and statistical mechanics. Lee was born in Shanghai and received his education in China until 1946 at which point he attended the University of Chicago which was made possible due to a Chinese government scholarship. In 1953, Lee accepted a position with the faculty of Columbia University but not before having completed his Ph.D from Chicago and doing postdoctorate research at various universities including the University of California at Berkeley and at the Institute for Advanced Study, in Princeton, New Jersey with Chen Ning Yang. In 1956, Lee turned his interest to the law of parity conservation and along with Chen Ning Yang, the validity of that law was researched. Through research it was found that the law was valid in regard to strong nuclear and electromagnetic forces, but Lee and Yang could not find any evidence of validity with weak interactions such as those responsible for beta decay. Through research, Lee and Yang also deduced that the theta- meson and the tau-meson were actually the same particle, currently known as the k- meson. Their work on the law of parity conservation led to Lee and Yang being jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957. Lee and Yang's research on parity conservation had major repurcussions with particle-physics theorists and led to many refinements in the particle-physics theory.

DR. DALE D. HOPPES, PHYSICIST This selection for third place in my Hall of Fame might be a surprise to you because you probably have never heard of this remarkable scientist. Dale Hoppes was born in Liberty, IN on September 13, 1928, a descendant of 11D11 Anthony Hoppes. He received a B.S. degree from Purdue University in 1950 and his Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America in 1961. Beginning in 1950, he worked as a nuclear physicist at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) in Washington D. C., and later moved to Gaithersburg, MD after the NBS relocated there. Nature is symmetrical and makes no distinction between right- and left-handed rotations, or between opposite sides of a subatomic particle. Ernest Ambler, Ralph Hudson, Raymond Hayward, and Dale Hoppes, displayed remarkable ingenuity in setting up and conducting a complex experiment involving beta particle decay. On December 27, 1956, they succeeded in demonstrating that beta particles failed to follow the parity postulate. The group worked round the clock to verify their results (with Dale Hoppes on occasion sleeping next to the experimental apparatus until the required temperatures were reached) and succeeded in verifying their results at 2 AM January 9, 1957. The fall of parity caused a revolution in quantum physics and earned Nobel Prizes for Drs. Lee and Yang.

2000 - Zhores I.
