http://www.chinatown-online.com/china/facts/worldmost/worldmost.htm
Facts about China: World and Asia Records History The oldest civilization : China has a written history of 4,000 years, and one of the four oldest world civilizations. The longest march in military history was the famous Long March by the Chinese Communists in 1934-35. In 368 days, of which 268 days were days of movement, from October to October, their force of 90,000 covered 9650 km 6,000 miles from Jiangxi to Yanan in Sheanxi via Yunnan. They crossed 18 mountain ranges and 6 major rivers and lost all but 22,000 of their force in continual rearguard actions against nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) forces. A team of the British 2ninth Commando Regiment, each man motor carrying a 18.14 kg 40 lb pack, including a rifle, covered the Plymouth Marathon, Plymouth, Great Britain in 4 hr 35 min 47.28 sec on 1 November 1987. The bloodiest civil war in history was the Taiping ('Great Peace') rebellion, which was a revolt against the Chinese Ch'ing dynasty between 1851 and 1864. The rebellion was led by the deranged Hung Hsiu-ch'uan (executed), who imagined himself to be a younger brother of Jesus Christ. His force was named T'ai-p'ing T'ien-kuo ('Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace'). According to the best estimates the loss of life was some 20 million, including more than 100,000 killed by government forces in the sack of Nanjing on 19-21 July 1864.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Yuan T. Lee The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1986 Yuan Tseh Lee was born on November 19, 1936 in Hsinchu, Taiwan. His father is an accomplished artist and his mother a school teacher. He started his early education while Taiwan was under Japanese occupation. His elementary education was disrupted soon after it started during World War II. It was not until after the war when Taiwan was returned to China that he was able to attend school normally as a third year student in grade school. By the end of his freshman year he had decided chemistry was to be chosen for his field. He worked under Professor Hua-sheng Cheng on his B. S. thesis which was on the separation of Sr and Ba using the paper electrophoresis method. After graduation in 1959, he went on to the National Tsinghua University to do his graduate work. He received his Master's degree on the studies of the natural radioisotopes contained in Hukutolite, a mineral of hot spring sediment under Professor H. Hamaguchi's guidance. After receiving his M. S. he stayed on at Tsinghua University as a research assistant of Professor C. H. Wong and carried out x-ray structure determination of tricyclopentadienyl samarium. Among some of the recognitions he has received include the Harrison Howe Award, Rochester Section, American Chemical Society, Peter Debye Award of Physical Chemistry and the Nobel Prize in 1986 together with Dudley Herschback and John C. Polanyi "for their contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes".

College Facts: History of the College Important dates Biographies The University of California was established in 1868 by the state for, "intellectual, scientific, moral and agricultural improvement," as a result of the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862. It was organized into colleges devoted to specific disciplines such as mining, civil engineering, agriculture and business. Over the next four years two chemists would be appointed with titles such as Professor of Chemistry, Mining and Metallurgy, but they were not kept. In 1872 the College of Chemistry was established and a Professor of Chemistry was appointed, but a Dean of the College was not appointed until 1886. The University gave its very first Ph.D. to

Download : Presentation Abstract ( .pdf format ) Yuan Tseh Lee was born on November 19, 1936 in Hsinchu, Taiwan. His father is an accomplished artist and his mother a school teacher. He started his early education while Taiwan was under Japanese occupation - a result of a war between China and Japan in 1894. His elementary education was disrupted soon after it started during World War II while the city populace was relocated to the mountains to avoid the daily bombing by the Allies. It was not until after the war when Taiwan was returned to China that he was able to attend school normally as a third year student in grade school. His elementary and secondary education in Hsinchu was rather colorful and full of fun. In elementary school, he was the second baseman on the school's baseball team as well as a member of the ping-pong team which won the little league championship in Taiwan. In high school he played on the tennis team besides playing trombone in the marching band.

LEE won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1986 together with Dudley R. Herschbach and John Polanyi for his work on chemical dynamics in molecular beams. Professor Yuan-Tseh Lee received his B.S. degree from the National Taiwan University in 1959. After finishing, his M.S. degree at TsingHua University, he pursued his Ph.D. thesis research at the University of California at Berkeley, followed by postdoctoral work as a Research Fellow with Dudley Herschbach at Harvard. After being appointed assistant professor at the University of Chicago in 1968, he rapidly made his laboratory the North American capital of molecular beam studies. Professor Lee returned to Berkeley as a full professor in 1974 and significantly expanded his research to include, in addition to crossed molecular beams, studies of reaction dynamics, investigations of various primary photochemical processes, and the spectroscopy of ionic and molecular clusters. In 1994, he retired from his position of University Professor and Principal Investigator for the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley and assumed the position of the President of Academia Sinica, Taiwan. His molecular beam work is seen as providing the experimental underpinning of much of our understanding of the dynamics of chemical reactions.
