Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Jean-Marie Lehn The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1987 Jean-Marie Lehn was born on September 30, 1939 in Rosheim, a small medieval city of Alsace in France. His father, Pierre Lehn was a baker. His mother Marie kept the house and the shop. He was the oldest of four sons and helped out in the shop with his first brother. He grew up in Rosheim during the years of the second world war, went to primary school after the war and, at age eleven, he entered high school, the College Freppel, located in Obernai. He also became interested in sciences, especially chemistry, so that he obtained the baccalaureat in Philosophy in July 1957 and in Experimental Sciences in September of the same year. Having obtained his degree of Docteur es Sciences (Ph. D. ) in June of 1963, he spent a year in the laboratory of Robert Burns Woodward at Harvard University, where he took part in the immense enterprise of the total synthesis of Vitamin B . After his return to Strasbourg, he began to work in the area of physical organic chemistry.

A major research effort is presently also devoted to supramolecular self-organisation, the design and properties of "programmed" supramolecular systems.

Press Releases BASF Group Press Releases BASF opens research lab at Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, France Supermolecules unite university and industry scientists
P-03-178 On April 1, 2003, BASF Aktiengesellschaft is opening a new research lab in the Institut de Science et d’Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS) in Strasbourg, France. ISIS founder, the Nobel Laureate Jean-Marie Lehn, set up the institute to foster interactions and bridge the gap between academic and industrial-research. Professor Lehn's concept centers on allowing selected companies to use university labs and facilities. Development of novel nanostructured polymer materials will be one of the main research areas of the BASF scientists in Strasbourg over the next few years. Though some of the labs and offices in the Louis Pasteur University-based Institut de Science et d’Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS) building in Strasbourg are still unoccupied, Dr. Volker Schädler, a BASF Aktiengesellschaft research chemist, is on the fifth floor assembling all the things he and four young scientists will need for their research into novel polymer-based specialty chemicals. The young scientists arriving here will find an ideal setting for exploratory polymer research. Situated on the campus of a major French university specializing in natural science, the lab is right at the cutting edge of research.
When he set up ISIS, the Nobel prize-winning scientist Professor Jean-Marie Lehn fulfilled his life's dream to combine the best of academic and industrial research under one roof. ISIS is intended to provide a setting for life scientists and material scientists to discover groundbreaking technologies in a creative, interdisciplinary working environment.

SOPHIE VINCENT 1492.
