http://www.historiadelpais.com.ar/leloir.htm

Luis Federico Leloir and Carlos E. Cardini: two pioneers of Biochemistry By Dr. Paladini at the Fisrt Intl. meeting on sucrose metabolism, Mar del Plata 1995.
(some editing by Luciana Funtowicz) This meeting honors two distinguished men of science and their epochal discovery of the mechanism of synthesis of sucrose. The consequences of this advance up to our day will be the substance of the homage that you will hear rendered here. My task is not to give homage to these two men, but to comment upon those days of discovery and to describe the atmosphere at the time, in the small laboratory, not quite yet an Institute, where Leloir and Cardini worked, first with Caputto, Trucco, and myself, and later with Cabib, Pontis and many others. These recollections may be new and attractive to some of you, while to others, my words might fill in details of a story perhaps only partially known. I was the first post-doctoral student of Cardini and Leloir at a time when biochemical studies were almost non-existent in an Argentina shaken by political unrest and life-threatening circumstances. This explains why we were assembled in very modest headquarters, actually a four-room house in a suburb of the city of Buenos Aires. The financial support for our studies came from industries owned by people obviously not in sympathy with the government but sensitive to community and welfare problems. Their attitude was very courageous since the autocratic authorities did not like competition in those areas which were the basis of their political power. As a consequence, we kept a low profile, our contacts being, almost exclusively, with the world outside Argentina. Of course, those were not times of fax or electronic mail, and we had to rely only on the infrequent visits from stray scientists, a few journals, an the first-class mail.

1970. Luis F. Leloir
