The first subject of investigation, suggested by Ranwel Caputto, was the formation of galactose in the mammary gland. They thought that in that tissue glucose should be the precursor of galactose, a constituent of milk lactose. Thanks to the use of yeast cultivated in galactose as a model system they could isolate two new coenzymes. The discovery of one of them, a coenzyme of phosphoglucomutase -an important enzyme of glycolysis- enabled the Campomar group to be internationally known and to be awarded a grant from NIH, which was renewed for over 20 years. The second coenzyme isolated in the Institute was the first member of a now large family of compounds, the nucleotide sugars, which participate in many essential biological processes. Now, there are approximately 31 investigators, 42 graduate students, and 38 supporting staff including technicians and administration. The primitive single subject about the role of nucleotide sugars in the metabolism of carbohydrates has mushroomed into an assortment of projects in several fields of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Through the years, over 100 students have worked for their Ph.D. and Master degrees. The Institute is involved in the teaching of several Graduate and Postgraduate courses from the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, University of Buenos Aires. Furthermore, every year professors from abroad participate in special short courses, open also to students from Latin American countries, on recent techniques and advances in leading subjects.
