My twin sister Paola and I were born in Turin on April 22, 1909, the youngest of four children. Our parents were Adamo Levi, an electrical engineer and gifted mathematician, and Adele Montalcini, a talented painter and an exquisite human being. Our older brother Gino, who died twelve years ago of a heart attack, was one of the most well known Italian architects and a professor at the University of Turin. Our sister Anna, five years older than Paola and myself, lives in Turin with her children and grandchildren. Ever since adolescence, she has been an enthusiastic admirer of the great Swedish writer, the Nobel Laureate , and she infected me so much with her enthusiasm that I decided to become a writer and describe Italian saga "à la Lagerlöf". But things were to take a different turn. The four of us enjoyed a most wonderful family atmosphere, filled with love and reciprocal devotion. Both parents were highly cultured and instilled in us their high appreciation of intellectual pursuit. It was, however, a typical Victorian style of life, all decisions being taken by the head of the family, the husband and father. He loved us dearly and had a great respect for women, but he believed that a professional career would interfere with the duties of a wife and mother. He therefore decided that the three of us - Anna, Paola and I - would not engage in studies which open the way to a professional career and that we would not enroll in the University. Ever since childhood, Paola had shown an extraordinary artistic talent and father's decision did not prevent her full-time dedication to painting. She became one of the most outstanding women painters in Italy and is at present still in full activity. I had a more difficult time. At twenty, I realized that I could not possibly adjust to a feminine role as conceived by my father, and asked him permission to engage in a professional career. In eight months I filled my gaps in Latin, Greek and mathematics, graduated from high school, and entered medical school in Turin. Two of my university colleagues and close friends

Levi-Montalcini, Rita (b. April 22, 1909, Turin, Italy), neurologist who, with Stanley Cohen , shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1986 for her discovery of a bodily substance that stimulates and influences the growth of nerve cells. She held dual citizenship in Italy and the United States. Levi-Montalcini studied medicine at the University of Turin and did research there on the effects that peripheral tissues have on nerve cell growth. She went into hiding in Florence during the German occupation of Italy (1943-45) because of her Jewish ancestry but was able to resume her research at Turin after the war. In 1947 she accepted a post at Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., with the zoologist Viktor Hamburger, who was studying the growth of nerve tissue in chick embryos. In 1948 it was discovered in Hamburger's laboratory that a variety of mouse tumour spurred nerve growth when implanted into chick embryos. Levi-Montalcini and Hamburger traced the effect to a substance in the tumour that they named nerve-growth factor (NGF). Levi-Montalcini showed that the tumour caused similar cell growth in a nerve-tissue culture kept alive in the laboratory, and Cohen, who by then had joined her at Washington University

Well, these are just two of the ideas that Rita Levi-Montalcini explored herself. One of her accomplishments won her the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1986. She discovered the nerve growth factor (NGF) that causes nerve cells to grow. Biography Highlights: Rita Levi-Montalcini was born on April 22, 1909 in Turin, Italy. She and her twin sister, Paola, are the youngest of four children. Although she was afraid of her father growing up, she admired his domineering energy and his dedication to his work. Levi-Montalcini was raised Jewish, but her father did not have strong ties to any religion. When she was a teenager, she did not know what she wanted to do. Her father did not want her to have an education because he believed that her marriage would suffer. However, when Levi-Montalcini was twenty, a family servant died of stomach cancer. This made her decide that she wanted to go to school. Her father had doubts, but Levi-Montalcini assured him that she did not want to marry. He finally decided to let her go to school. In 1953, the Italian biologist met, Stanley Cohen, a biochemist. They worked together on ways to treat burns and diseases such as cancer. When other scientists became interested in the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), no one mentioned Levi-Montalcini's contribution to the discovery. She became a U.S. citizen in 1956, but decided to return to Italy to work on other problems.
