Levi-Montalcini, Rita 1909-, Italian-American neurologist, b. Turin, Italy. A dual citizen of Italy and the United States, Levi-Montalcini did her most important work at Washington Univ. with Stanley Cohen . Studying mouse tumors implanted in chicken embryos, the pair isolated a nerve-growth factor, the first of many cell-growth factors found in animals. For this discovery Levi-Montalcini and Cohen were awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. See her autobiography, In Praise of Imperfection

Adapted from Purves, D. and Lichtman, J. W. 1985. Principles of Neural Development. Sinauer Associates, Sunderland, MA.
Rita Levi-Montalcini, Nobel Laureate, 1986. During this time, Levi-Montalcini's home in Turin became a meeting place for the friends and former students of G. Levi, as well as a laboratory. By 1942, however, the intense bombing of Turin forced Levi-Montalcini to move to the countryside. Here conditions for research were even more primitive, and her experimental eggs were often consumed after they had yielded up their results. In spite of these deprivations, she completed a study of the acoustical-vestibular centers of the chick, a study that was published in the United States some years later (Levi-Montalcini, 1949). When the Nazis invaded Italy after Mussolini's fall in 1943, Levi-Montalcini and her family fled again to Florence, where they became refugees, surviving by anonymity. Finally, with the end of the war in 1945, she returned to Turin and became the assistant of Levi, who resumed his position as professor of anatomy at the University. In 1946 she received a letter from Hamburger, who had read her articles with Levi on the relation between the periphery and the developing nerve centers; because they disagreed on the interpretation of similar results (Hamburger, 1934), Hamburger invited her to work for a 1-year period in his laboratory in St. Louis. Thus, in 1947 Levi-Montalcini finally left Turin to spend "the next 26 years, the happiest and most productive of my life" at Washington University (Levi-Montalcini, 1975). In 1974 she returned to Rome, where she has carried out numerous additional studies on NGF at the Instituto di Biologia Cellulare.

    Time for Changes

    Wednesday 14 May
Villa Aurelia - 6pm Nobel Laureate in Medicine for 1986, Prof. Levi-Montalcini will address the themes of her latest book, Tempo di mutamenti , in which she argues for radical changes in the education of young children, in the preparation of youth for participation in the economy, and in the near-exclusion of women from decision-making roles in world politics. This event belongs to a series of annual lectures by distinguished scientists, addressed specifically to artists and to scholars in the humanities. Ms. Levi-Montalcini is Professor Emerita of the Italian National Council of Research and the Washington University, St. Louis.

THE SAGA OF THE NERVE GROWTH FACTOR
    Preliminary Studies, Discovery, Further Development

by Rita Levi-Montalcini (Istituto di Neurobiologia, Italy)
This volume is a collection of articles written by Nobel Laureate Rita Levi-Montalcini and published from 1942 to 1995. Studies described in the first part set the stage for the discovery of a protein molecule which became known as the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), described in detail in the second part. The NGF synthesized in minute amounts in all vertebrate tissues, plays an essential role in the differentiation and survival of several nerve cell populations in the peripheral and central nervous system. The discovery of the NGF was defined by the Nobel Foundation as a milestone in developmental neurobiology, and the author was awarded in 1986 with this prestigious award. Studies pursued in subsequent years and still in progress, have unveiled other fundamental properties of the NGF, described in the third part of this volume.

Oh, I have a beautiful story about Nobel committee concerning
awarding Nobel prize to Rita Levi-Montalcini in 1986 for the
discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF).
I don't know whether this story is dead and buried or whether
it ever made any appearance in anglo-saxon media at all.
Apparently, it is absent from the book reviewed by Al Higgins. It is strange. I tried this morning to find something in the Internet about it
but, alas, all I found is a short posting to SCIFRAUD quoted below (no responses followed). It was, obviously the statement of refuting allegations. Of course, allegations themselves are more interesting. I have under the hand a publication in russian "Izvestia" (5 Sep 1995) on this subject with reference to swedish "Dagens Nuecheter". I can post its translation if necessary (Oh, I'm afraid, nobody here

Synopsis This documentary tells the life of Rita Levi-Montalcini in the form of a long interview especially carried out for the occasion. From her studies in Italy, made difficult by the fascist racial laws, to the setting up of a biology laboratory in the kitchen of her home -where her earliest intuitions and discoveries took place- up to when she moved to the United States, where she would stay for thirty years, working at the University of St. Luis. A vast amount of documentary material, including private family films shot by Rita Levi-Montalcini herself.
