Thomas Hunt Morgan, professor of zoology at Columbia from 1904 to 1929, pioneered the use of drosophilia and himself won the Nobel Prize in 1933. The fly has proved extraordinarily useful in genetics research because it is easy to grow, has huge chromosomes in the larval stage and has a short lifespan10 days or fewer. Counting the Nobel laureates... Does it prove what the Discovery Institute says it does?
by Wesley R. Elsberry In their viewer's guide pretentiously (and erroneously, as I will demonstrate below) titled, "Getting the Facts Straight", the Discovery Institute gives us this discussion: The narrator says that anti-evolution efforts following the Scopes trial "had a chilling effect on the teaching of evolution and the publishers of science textbooks. For decades, Darwin seemed to be locked out of America's public schools. But then evolution received an unexpected boost from a very unlikely source the Soviet Union." When the Soviets launched the first man-made satellite, Sputnik, in 1957, Americans were goaded into action. The narrator continues: "As long-neglected science programs were revived in America's classrooms, evolution was, too. Biblical literalists have been doing their best to discredit Darwin's theory ever since." This takes the distortion of history one giant step further. It is blatantly false that U.S. science education was "neglected" after the Scopes trial because Darwinism was "locked out of America's public schools." During those supposedly benighted decades, American schools produced more Nobel Prize-winners than the rest of the world put together. And in physiology and medicine the fields that should have been most stunted by a neglect of Darwinism the U.S. produced fully twice as many Nobel laureates as all other countries combined. How about the U.S. space program? Was it harmed by the supposed neglect of Darwinism in public schools? Contrary to what Evolution implies, the U.S. space program in 1957 was in good shape. The Soviet Union won the race to launch the first satellite because it had made that one of its highest national priorities. The U.S., on the other hand, had other priorities such as caring for its citizens and rebuilding a war-torn world. When Sputnik prodded Americans to put more emphasis on space exploration, the U.S. quickly surpassed the Soviet Union and landed men on the Moon. The necessary resources and personnel were already in place; the U.S. didn't have to wait for a new generation of rocket scientists trained in evolution.

July 6, 2000
President William Jefferson Clinton The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20502 Dear Mr. President: We urge you not to make the decision to deploy an anti-ballistic missile system during the remaining months of your administration. The system would offer little protection and would do grave harm to this nation's core security interests. We and other independent scientists have long argued that anti-ballistic missile systems, particularly those attempting to intercept reentry vehicles in space, will inevitably lose in an arms race of improvements to offensive missiles. North Korea has taken dramatic steps toward reconciliation with South Korea. Other dangerous states will arise. But what would such a state gain by attacking the United States except its own destruction? While the benefits of the proposed anti-ballistic missile system are dubious, the dangers created by a decision to deploy are clear. It would be difficult to persuade Russia or China that the United States is wasting tens of billions of dollars on an ineffective missile system against small states that are unlikely to launch a missile attack on the U.S. The Russians and Chinese must therefore conclude that the presently planned system is a stage in developing a bigger system directed against them. They may respond by restarting an arms race in ballistic missiles and having missiles in a dangerous "launch-on-warning" mode.

The March of Dimes Story The Nobel Laureates
Over the years, several scientists connected with the March of Dimes have won the Nobel Prize. Among them are:
Dr. Linus Pauling: discovered relationship between molecular structure newborn screening and human diseases.
Dr. John F. Enders, Dr. Thomas Weller and Dr. Frederick Robbins: developed tissue culture method for growing polio virus. Dr. James D. Watson: identified double helix structure of DNA. Dr. Max Delbruck: showed how genes direct normal development and mutations cause abnormal development. Dr. D. Carleton Gajdusek: discovered role of unconventional infectious agents in certain rare degenerative brain disorders. Dr. Joseph L. Goldstein: identified cellular cause of familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic disorder causing very high cholesterol in the blood. Dr. Edward B. Lewis and Dr. Eric F. Wieschaus: identified master genes that control early structural development of the body.

Note from the Publishers
This reprinted edition has its origins in two independent initiatives. Prompted by colleagues on the scientific staff, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press has in recent years republished two long-out-of-print books with both historical interest and continued contemporary relevance: The Biology of Drosophila by Milislav Demerec and The Structure and Reproduction of Corn by Theodore Kiesselbach. The response to these volumes was warm and encouraging, so when the idea of reviving Sturtevant's classic was suggested, we were enthusiastic, particularly when it was pointed out that Sturtevant's student and recent Nobel Prize winner, Edward Lewis, might be persuaded to write a new introduction to the book. Dr. Lewis kindly agreed to the task and did his part quickly and well. However, the currently rapid rate of growth and expansion within the Press meant that momentum on the project slowed, since the project lacked the urgency of books with the latest research results that are our typical output.

February 9, 1998 To the President of the United States and Members of the United States Congress. There is a broad consensus supporting the President's National Biomedical Ethics Advisory Commission's proposal to ban the creation of a human being by somatic nuclear transplants. The Commission urged that such a ban should not deliberately or inadvertently interfere with biomedical research that is critical to the understanding and eventual prevention of human disease. To that end, we the undersigned endorse the ">statement on cloning from the American Society for Cell Biology . If legislation is deemed to be necessary, we respectfully urge you to ensure that it be limited to the cloning of human beings, and does not include language that impedes critical ongoing and potential new research.
