They had to rely on relative dating techniques, which typically held great potential for error. Then, scientist Willard Frank Libby came up with the method known as radiocarbon dating, a process that revolutionized the way we look at artifacts and document world history. Libby was born in Grand Valley, Colorado, on December 17, 1908. He enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley in 1927, where he received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in 1931 and 1933, respectively. In 1933 he accepted an appointment at Berkeley as an instructor in the chemistry department. During the next eight years was promoted to assistant and then associate professor of chemistry. A physical chemist, Libby developed specialties in radiochemistry, particularly hot atom chemistry and tracer techniques. In 1941 Libby was awarded a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and elected to work at Princeton University. In December of that year, however, the Fellowship was interrupted as the United States entered World War II. Libby went to Columbia University to work on the Manhattan District Project to develop the atomic bomb.

Joseph Priestley Celebration
Each year the Priestley Celebration brings to campus a distinguished scientist to be honored for discoveries which contribute to the welfare of mankind. The award is made in memory of Joseph Priestley, discoverer of oxygen. During the celebration, the College's collection of Priestley apparatus and memorabilia is displayed. The recipient is given an honorarium and a ceramic medallion struck from an original 1779 mold by Josiah Wedgwood which bears a likeness of Priestley derived from a pen-and-ink drawing by John Flaxman. Recipients of the Priestley Award are:
1952 Sir Hugh Stott Taylor, for research and teaching in physical chemistry.
1953 Paul R. Burkholder, for the discovery of chloromycetin.
1954 Karl T. Compton, for peacetime use of atomic energy.
1955 Harold C. Urey, for the discovery of deuterium. Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 1934.
1956 Detlev W. Bronk, for distinguished service to mankind through biochemistry.
1957 Edward Teller, for distinguished work in nuclear physics.
1958 George Bogdan Kistiakowski, for work in chemical kinetics and thermodynamics.

Willard Frank Libby,
(b. 17.12.1908, d. 1980) (American) The Great Flood
With the closing of the Millennium, dating the past is particularly in our minds. Anthropologists and especially archaeologists invest great efforts in dating a particular skeleton, structure, or event. Last week's newspapers, for instance, reported a confirmation of a great flood which occurred thousands of years ago and which might be identified with the Biblical Deluge: The level of the Black Sea rose, in a few years, by 170 meters! This catastrophic event resulted from a rise in the level of the world's oceans , which in turn arose from the melting of the enormous glaciers which covered the northern continents during the last great Ice Age. Until that point, the Black Sea had been cut off, but now seawater broke through into the Black Sea at the Straits of Bosporus (Turkey) and filled it up to the level of the world's oceans. The waterfall at its peak must have been quite a sight, far exceeding Niagara in volume! (An even greater stream had occurred at Gibraltar a few thousand years earlier when the Atlantic Ocean broke through into the Mediterranean Sea.)

The Papers of Abraham Lincoln This week in Illinois history, a Nobel Prize winning chemist who developed carbon dating was born.
Willard Frank Libby was born in Colorado on December 17, 1908. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1933 at the University of California at Berkeley. He taught as a professor there until 1941 when he moved to Columbia University and worked on the Manhattan Project to build the world's first nuclear weapon.
After the war, Libby moved to Chicago to become a professor of Chemistry at the University of Chicago. While in Illinois in 1947, he led a team of scientists that developed the process of carbon-dating to determine the age of organic objects. Because of this discovery, he won the Nobel Prize in 1960. He remained at Chicago until 1959, when he returned to California to become the Director of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics. He remained there until his death in 1980.
His Nobel Prize winning achievement concerned the carbon-dating technique that became invaluable to earth scientists, anthropologists and archeologists. Scientists have heralded Libby's method of dating objects as one of the most significant discoveries in the twentieth century.
