    Sir Derek H(arold) R(ichard) Barton was a British chemist , a joint recipient (with Odd Hassel of Norway) of the 1969 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for research that helped establish conformational analysis - the study of the 3-D geometric structure of complex molecules. In a brief paper in Experienta entitled "The Conformation of the Steroid Nucleus" (1950), Barton showed that organic molecules in general and steroid molecules in particular could be assigned a preferred conformation based on work of chemical physicists, in particular by Odd Hassel. Conformational analysis is useful in the elucidation of configuration, in the planning of organic synthesis, and in the analysis of reaction mechanisms. It is fundamental to a complete understanding of enzymatic processes. Viktor Meyer

    Born 8 Sep 1848; died 8 Aug 1897.
    German chemist who contributed greatly to knowledge of both organic and inorganic chemistry and invented an apparatus for determining vapour densities (and hence molecular weights), now named after him. In 1871, Meyer experimentally proved Avogadro's hypothesis by measuring the vapour densities of volatile substances (molecular weight, or relative molecular mass, is twice the vapour density). He went on to determine the vapour densities of inorganic substances at high temperatures. From benzene obtained from petroleum, Meyer in 1883 isolated thiophene, a heterocyclic compound containing sulphur, which much later was to become an important component of various synthetic drugs.

    Radiocarbon Laboratory Radiocarbon chronometry, as other complex research methods, is considered to be an independent branch of science. The group of several scientists developed it after many years of work. Though there is one man, which undoubtedly should be regarded as a father of the radiocarbon chronometry, Willard Frank Libby, honoured with the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1960. The year 1946 is considered as the beginning of radiocarbon chronometry development. M. Kamen and S. Ruben, Libby's close co-workers, were first to obtain C isotope as a result of 14N (n, p) C reaction, during their experiments carried in 1937 on the Berkeley's cyclotron. During the World War II both scientists, along with W.F. Libby, were engaged in the Manhattan Project. Farther, more regular research, carried under the leadership of Enrico Fermi as a part of Manhattan Project, led to determination of the cross-section for 14N (n, p) C reaction, and a more exact estimation of

    Brief Biography of Willard F. Libby (from Nobel Lectures, Chemistry 1942-1962)
    At the end of the war, in 1945, Libby accepted the post of Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Institute for Nuclear Studies (now the Enrico Fermi Institute for Nuclear Studies) of Chicago University, remaining there till his appointment by President Eisenhower on 1st October, 1954, as a member of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. This appointment was renewed by the President for a further five-year term on 19th June, 1956, but Libby resigned from it on 30th June, 1959, to become Professor of Chemistry in the University of California at Los Angeles, being appointed Director of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics on 1st January, 1962. Libby is a Physical Chemist, and specialist in radiochemistry, particularly hot atom chemistry, tracer techniques, and isotope tracer work. He became well-known at Chicago University for his work on natural carbon-14 (radiocarbon) and its use in dating archaeological artifacts, and natural tritium, and its use in hydrology and geophysics.
