Konrad Lorenz was born on November 7, 1903 in Austria. As a little boy, he loved animals and collected a variety of them. He had fish, dogs, monkeys, insects, ducks, and geese. His interest in animal behavior was intense. A neighbor gave him a duckling and he noticed that it transferred it's response to him, discovering imprinting as a young child. When he was 10 years old, Lorenz discovered evolution by reading a book by Wilhelm Bolsche. He saw a picture of an extract Archaeopteryx ( reptile) and began to understand the relationship between an earthworm and insects. Evolution gave him insight. If reptiles could become birds, annelid worms could develop into insects. As an adult, he held doctorates in medicine, zoology, and psychology and became one of Austria's most famous scientists. Initially, he wanted to become a paleontologist, although he was interested in evolution and wanted to study zoology and paleontology. However, he obeyed his father and went to medical school. He studied medicine at Vienna, became a professor at the Albertus University in Konigberg, and went on to direct the Institute of Comparative Ethology at Altenberg, where he created a comparative ethology department in the Max Planck Institute. He co-directed the program in 1954. He is considered the founder of ethology, who has given to the world a deeper insight of behavioral patterns in animals. In 1966, he wrote

Nikolaas Tinbergen was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on April 15, 1907. As a young boy, he was not interested in academics, neither high school nor college, so he scraped by, doing just enough to pass. He spent much of his time just observing the abundant wildlife in their natural habitat of Holland. Opposed to attending college, Niko's father sent him to spend time with a famous experimental biologist, Professor J. Thienemann who shared with him "the massive autumn migration of birds, the wild Moose, and the famous Wanderdünen." ( Tinbergen, 1975). Soon after returning to Holland, Tinbergen made the decision to study biology at Leiden University. After he completed his years there, he became engaged to Elisabeth Rutten. Knowing that he would have to soon support this woman, he decided to use his chance study of Beewolves (digger wasps)and their remarkable homing abilities. Next, he and his new wife left with a small group from the Netherlands for two years to live with a small isolated Eskimo tribe in Angmagssalik. Upon his return to Holland, Niko took a minor instructor's job where he was to teach comparative anatomy and to organize a course in animal behavior for undergraduates. He engaged in a lot of fieldwork and further studies on Beewolves, insects, and birds at this time, and he made his famous observation of stickleback courtship. Tinbergen developed a lifelong habit of carefully observing animals in their natural environment. It has been through the work of Niko Tinbergen that the study of Ethology has gained much respect and legitimacy.

    by David Forrest
© David Forrest, September 2001 Previous Next How can humankind produce Mother Teresa and Hitler, compassion and cruelty, humanitarianism and terrorism? How can any human being make the destruction of others the defining purpose of their life? These are age-old questions that we are confronted with again and again. According to one school of thought, war, violence and aggression are an inevitable outcome of our evolutionary heritage. “Man is a predator,” Robert Ardrey wrote in the book African Genesis , “with an instinct to kill and a genetic cultural affinity for the weapon.” Ardrey is joined by others in this point of view. There is evidence, behaviourist Konrad Lorenz said in his book On Aggression , that several of our early relatives, African Australopithecines and Peking Man, preyed on their own kind. Conceptual thought and speech have proven to be both a blessing and a curse, Lorenz said. Lifting us above all other species, while at the same time creating conflict among ourselves, and giving rise to what he called ‘militant enthusiasm.’ As a species we still respond today with instincts buried deep in the primal past, joining the call to battle. Lorenz described the inevitable and ever recurring consequences. “One soars elated above all the ties of everyday life, one is ready to abandon all for the call of what, in the moment of this specific emotion, seems to be a sacred duty. All obstacles in its path become unimportant; the instinctive inhibitions against hurting or killing one’s fellows lose, unfortunately, much of their power. Rational considerations, criticism, and all reasonable arguments against the behaviour dictated by militant enthusiasm are silenced by an amazing reversal of all values, making them appear not only untenable but base and dishonourable. Men may enjoy the feeling of absolute righteousness even while they commit atrocities. Conceptual thought and moral responsibility are at their lowest ebb.”
