John James Richard Macleod was born on September 6, 1876 at Cluny, near Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the son of the Rev. Robert Macleod. When later the family moved to Aberdeen, Macleod went to the Grammar School there and later entered the Marischal College of the University of Aberdeen to study medicine.
In 1898 he took his medical degree with honours and was awarded the Anderson Travelling Fellowship, which enabled him to work for a year at the Institute for Physiology at the University of Leipzig
In 1899 he was appointed Demonstrator of Physiology at the London Hospital Medical School under Professor Leonard Hill and in 1902 he was appointed Lecturer in Biochemistry at the same College. In that year he was awarded the McKinnon Research Studentship of the Royal Society, which he held until 1903, when he was appointed Professor of Physiology at the Western Reserve University at Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.

John James Richard Macleod – Nobel Lecture
Nobel Lecture, May 26, 1925
The physiology of insulin and its source in the animal body
The knowledge that the isles of Langerhans of the pancreas have the function of secreting into the blood a hormone which plays an essential role in the regulation of the metabolism of the carbohydrates, is the outcome of numerous investigations extending over many years, and to the development of this knowledge workers in various fields of medical science have contributed. The insular hypothesis of diabetes was meanwhile strongly supported by the careful histological studies of the pancreas of patients who had died from the disease (Opie) for, although it had been known, even prior to the experiments of Minkowski and von Mering, that the gland is often the seat of morbid change, it was not realized that the islets are the structures which are chiefly affected. In 1903-1904, Rennie, by anatomical studies in certain Teleostei, gave strong support to the view of Diamare, that the islet cells in these fishes exist as separate glands of relatively large size and more or less independent of the pancreatic acini. Both workers attempted to demonstrate an effect of extracts of these glands on sugar or starch solutions, but without success. They administered them by mouth to diabetic patients with no favourable results, although in one case, in which an extract was given subcutaneously, there was decided alleviation of the diabetic symptoms (Rennie and Fraser).

nobel Speech. THE PHYSIOILOGY OF INSULIN AND ITS SOURCE IN THE ANIMAL BODY.nobel lecture delivered at Stockholm on May 26th 1925 by JJR macleod.
http://www.discoveryofinsulin.com/MacLeod.htm
Biography Originally from Scotland, Dr. Macleod worked as a professor in the department of physiology at the University of Toronto. His area of expertise was in carbohydrate metabolism, the process by which the body breaks down ingested food to convert it to energy and other small molecules that the body requires. Dr. Macleod was reluctant, at first, to give Dr. Banting some research space at the University of Toronto. However, Dr. Banting's persistence convinced Dr. Macleod to allow the experiments to be conducted in the summer of 1921. Dr. Macleod's research experience directed the discovery experiments with proper designs and experimental controls. As well as, helping communicate the findings of the studies to other researchers. Dr. Macleod left the University of Toronto some time after the discovery of insulin to return to Scotland. Nobel Speech THE PHYSIOILOGY OF INSULIN AND ITS SOURCE IN THE ANIMAL BODY Nobel lecture delivered at Stockholm on May 26th 1925 by J. J. R. Macleod. Nobel centennial and diabetes
THE NOBEL Prize is 100 years old. The Nobel foundation has announced the Centennial celebrations, to be held in Stockholm and Oslo, beginning from the 1st of December 2001 and culminating on 10th December when the year 2001 laureates receive their prizes. In the context of the centennial, the awards connected with diabetes need special mention. The important one was the 1923 prize for Medicine and Physiology awarded to Dr. Frederick Grant Banting (1891-1941) and Dr. John James Richard Macleod (1876- 1935) for the discovery of insulin. The other prize was the 1947 prize to Dr.Carl Ferdinand Cori (1896-1984), Dr. Gerty Theresa nee Radnitz Cori (1896-1957) and Dr. Bernardo Alberto Houssay (1887-1971) for their discovery of course of catalytic conversion of Glycogen. The 1923 prize to Banting and Macleod was probably the only occasion in the last 100 years of Nobel prizes, when the prize was given the year after the discovery. It is probably by providence that such a thing happened. Choice of Dr. Banting and Dr. Macleod for the prize has been debated, as there was no recognition given to Dr. Charles Best. To explain this omission we should go back a few years earlier to 1920 when the Danish scientist 'Dr. Schack August Steenberg Krogh' (1874-1949) won the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology for discovering capillary motor regulating mechanism.
