About the Author and His Work Born in 1911 to a low-ranking civil servant, Mahfouz grew up in Gamaliyya, a tradition-rich section of historical Cairo. At age 19, he enrolled in the Department of Philosophy at Cairo University (then King Fuad University), from which he graduated in 1934. Following his graduation, Mahfouz found employment as a clerk in the civil service, where he worked in various governmental departments until his retirement in 1971. Mahfouz's literary career began in the late '30s with the publication of his first collection of short stories, The Whisper of Madness (1938), and a historical trilogy that dramatizes events and characters from ancient Egyptian history. The second and far more crucial phase of Mahfouz's literary career begins with the publication of his novel New Cairo in 1945. As its title suggests, the focus in this novel shifts to contemporary life in modern Egypt. Between 1945 and 1957, Mahfouz published seven more novels, all of which were written in the style of social realism. The crowning achievement of this phase-and perhaps of his career-are the three novels which make up

Papaya Palace: Essays
Naguib Mahfouz: Narrative Artist Naguib Mahfouz is one of the best known Arab authors in the Western World. Mahfouz was born in 1911 in Gamaliyya an old quarter of Cairo, Egypt. His first novel was published in 1939, and since then he has published 40 books and 13 short story collections. His stories have been adapted for television, movies and stage throughout the Middle East, however, they lend such a keen insight into the structure of human society and social processes that they have universal appeal. The short summary of his major themes is "the personal is political." Mahfouz continually reminds us that human beings are a part of the systems in which they reside, and have power to shape those systems in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. He maintains a delicate balance between the individual and societal level in his stories the characters and systems interact but do not fully blend. This emphasis on both personal and political elements is an echo of Mahfouz's own life. From 1934 to 1971 he served as a civil servant in a variety of Egyptian ministries. He contibuted to the political life of Egypt at the same time that he was definining one aspect of its cultural life the novel in the same way his characters live dual lives as both political subjects and objects. This delicate political balance has brought Mahfouz trouble. In 1994 he was attacked by Muslim radicals who called for his death because of Mahfouz's support of peace with Israel. Two of his books are banned in Egypt.

Palace of Desire: Book II of the Cairo Trilogy
Nobel Prize Winners (1988)
Author Info: Naguib Mahfouz
(Translated by William Maynard Hutchins, Lorne M. Kenny and Olive E. Kenny)
Palace of Desire continues the Cairo Trilogy of Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz. Like it's excellent predecessor, Palace Walk, it follows the family saga of the patriarchal merchant al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad and his children in 1920s Egypt. The changes occurring in the family parallel the upheaval in the outside world as a new generation comes to power, challenging al-Sayyid on the one hand and English rule on the other. The particular focus of this installment is Kamal, a nascent writer who is apparently modeled on Mahfouz himself. The book brilliantly evokes the lost world of 20's Cairo and there are some funny set pieces, typically involving sex. But the story is badly under plotted and presents fairly few ideas, two factors which combine to make for a pretty lackluster read. As the story meanders along, we get a richly detailed picture of these peoples lives, but seem to be living them in real time; one longs for something, other than the sort of casual serial adultery which is the staple of the book, to happen. I didn't like it nearly as much as Palace Walk , but it was still worthwhile as a sharply observed portrait of a time and place about which we in the West know fairly little.
