Nelson Mandela

Naguib MAHFOUZ
Egyptian writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988, and was the first Arabic writer to be so honored. Man in the Arab world saw the prize somewhat ironic, not least because the work for which Mahfouz received the prize had been published at least three decades earlier. However,Mahfouz's books are still unavailable in many Middle Eastern countries on account of his support for President Sadat's Camp David peace treaty with Israel in 1978. Mahfouz have writtensome 40 novels and short story collections, 30 screenplays and many plays..

    Nelson (Rolihlahla Dalibhunga) Mandela
AKA Madiba Country: South Africa. Cause: Ending of South African apartheid regime. Background: By 1600 all of what is now South Africa has been settled by indigenous Africans. European intrusion into the region begins in 1652 when the Dutch establish a settlement at the Cape of Good Hope on the southwestern tip of Africa. The British seizure of the settlement in 1795 leads to conflict with the established European farmers (the Boer). The conflict eventually boils over into the Boer War of 1899-1902. The British win but ultimately opt to give South Africa independence. The Union of South Africa is formed on 31 May 1910. Black South Africans have limited voting rights and are subjected to building discrimination. In 1948 the National Party wins the all-white general election on a campaign promise to introduce a system of "apartheid" to totally separate the races. Opposition to the apartheid system by the black majority is ruthlessly suppressed. The National Party will remain in power until 1994. More background Mini biography: Born on 18 July 1918 in little village of Mvezo in Qunu in southern Transkei, South Africa, into the royal family of the Tembu, a Xhosa-speaking tribe.

Nelson Mandela, a former Nobel Peace Prize winner, recently called Bush arrogant and said, "...that the United States, which callously dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has no moral authority to police the world." He then added, "If there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America."
Mandela then concluded by asking the following moral question, "Who are they now to pretend that they are the policemen of the world, the ones that should decide for the people of Iraq what should be done with their government and their leadership?"
