N elson Mandela’s birth-name was Rolihlahla, which means troublemaker in his native language. To some, he lived up to his name but to others he was a hero. As a life-long combatant against apartheid, he was a troublemaker to the South African government but to the people of South Africa he will be remembered as a warrior, a universal peacemaker, a political prisoner, and winner of some 200 international awards including the Nobel Peace Prize. In his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom , Mandela wrote, "I have no epiphany, no singular destiny, no moment of truth, but a steady accumulation of a thousand slights, a thousand unremembered moments, produced in me an anger, a rebelliousness, a desire to fight the system that imprisoned my people." Rolihlahla Daibhunga Mandela, was born in 1918 in a small village in South Africa’s Eastern cape. He was educated there and completed two years of university before leaving for Johannesburg. Mandela’s political career began in 1944, when he launched a Youth League to help give direction to the African National Congress. The ANC, was an organization composed of chiefs, representatives of church organizations, and other prominent individuals who aimed to bring all Africans together as one people to defend their rights and freedoms.

After being acquitted (1962) on charges of treason, he was arrested (1964) and convicted of sabotage and sentenced to life in prison, where he became the leading symbol of South Africa's oppressed black majority. He represented the ANC in the turbulent negotiations that led to establishment of majority rule. Mandela and de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1993. After his father's death, Mandela was placed under the guardianship of a tribal regent who exerted a strong influence on him, grooming the young man for future tribal duties and leadership. Mandela developed a strong admiration for his guardian, but also was largely influenced by his attendance at Methodist elementary and secondary schools, where he remembers being taught to identify with British interests and adopt the role of a culturally inferior African. At 21, he entered the University College of Fort Hare in Alice.

http://nd.essortment.com/nelsonmandelab_rwdv.htm
Biography about Nelson Mandela, a great political and moral leader
Former South African President and 1993 Nobel prize winner, Nelson Mandela is a great political and moral leader of our times. Over 80 years old, he continues to work tirelessly for those who need his help, demonstrating clearly all the qualities that make him into a great leader: bodyOffer(21975) Vision One of the qualities of a good leader is a strong clear vision and the ability to convey it. You need to understand where you want to lead your people, how you plan to get them there, and the ability to communicate this destination to your people. Nelson Mandela was able to do that admirably. Theme A theme is what people associate you with, which in an effective leader will be the relentless pursuit of the vision. For example, Franklin D. Roosevelt's theme was clear: We're going to offer a New Deal to take care of people. Although people associate Nelson Mandela with the fight for the liberation of South Africa, his theme is about more than just South Africa’s liberation. Nelson Mandela’s theme is about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the fact that all people are entitled to these rights. ‘…the values of happiness, justice, human dignity, peace and prosperity have a universal application because each people and every individual is entitled to them,’ he said in one of his speeches. ‘Similarly, no people can truly say it is blessed with happiness, peace and prosperity where others, as human as itself, continue to be afflicted with misery, armed conflict and terrorism and deprivation.’

72. Nelson Mandela, A Villain Portrayed As A Hero
From Time Inc nelson mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of fightagainst racial oppression in South Africa won him the nobel Peace Prize
http://www.ourcivilisation.com/decline/villain.htm
Note from A Study Of Our Decline Nelson Mandela, A Villain Portrayed As A Hero Nelson Mandela is a South African citizen who chose to place his private resentment of the existing apartheid regime above the welfare of his country. He actively campaigned to replace a regime that gave order and wealth, with a regime that could only ever give anarchy and poverty. But for helping to convert a prosperous, safe and stable community into an impoverished, unstable and dangerous community (see Letter from South Africa ), he has won international plaudits, including the Nobel peace prize awarded in Oslo in 1993. The undeniable and predictable result of overturning the apartheid regime are ignored, as he is enthusiastically praised (circa late 1990s) in the Australian, English and American media. Even a letter to The Times in London, by the widow of the author of the anti-apartheid book " Cry, My Beloved Country ", did not alter this blind adulation. Her sincere confession that social conditions had deteriorated so much that the sins of the previous apartheid regime now seemed trivial, failed to shake the prejudice that Nelson Mandela was a hero whose sacrifice had won a better life for South Africans. Typical Plaudits For Mandela - 1999 From Time Inc Nelson Mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of our time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multi-racial government and majority rule. He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality.

His lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in his country won him the admiration of millions worldwide, as well as the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his nation. As the leader of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, Mandela was a key player in helping to move his country toward multiracial government and majority rule. When Nelson Mandela stood trial for sabotage and attempting to overthrow the tyrannical South African regime in the 1960s, he could have pleaded for a less severe sentence. Instead, he seized the opportunity to speak out against the injustices he and his fellow black citizens suffered due to the racist system imposed by the government. Since an early age, Mandela dreamed of the day he would make a contribution to the freedom of his people. Mandela's long, hard struggle is a triumph of dignity and hope over persecution, despair and hatred. During his 27 years of imprisonment, he gained support the world over for his fight against apartheid. His determination and self-sacrifice eventually resulted in a free, multiracial democracy for South Africa. In December 1996, he personally signed his country's new constitution, which put an end to the unjust policies of the former racist government.

Nelson Mandela
South African statesman, 1993 Nobel Prize for Peace. 1918-
I have never cared very much for personal prizes. A man does not become a freedom fighter in the hope of winning awards, but when I was notified that I had won the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Mr de Klerk, I was deeply moved. The Nobel Peace Prize had a special meaning to me because of its involvement with South African history.... The award was a tribute to all South Africans and especially to those who fought in the struggle; I would accept it on their behalf. We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right. When the water starts boiling it is foolish to turn off the heat. Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that a son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another. That was one of the things that worried me - to be raised to the position of a semi-god - because then you are no longer a human being. I wanted to be known as Mandela, a man with weaknesses, some of which are fundamental, and a man who is committed, but never the less, sometimes he fails to live up to expectations.

Nobel Prize winner F.W. de Klerk to speak at KU on Saturday
Editor's note: De Klerk will be available for brief interviews about 15 minutes before his lecture. Contact Fallon Farokhi for details. LAWRENCE Former South African President F.W. de Klerk, who received a Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela in 1993, will speak at the University of Kansas campus later this week. De Klerk will deliver the lecture "The Challenge of Change" at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at the Lied Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at Student Union Activities, Liberty Hall and Murphy Hall box offices. Admission is $5, but KU ID holders pay $2 per ticket. SUA and Student Senate are sponsoring the event, which is part of the 2002 Student Lecture Series. As South Africa's first "television president," de Klerk developed a friendlier, more open and accessible relationship with the media than his predecessors. He was praised widely for his efforts to keep South Africa on the negotiation path as it moved toward a nonracial democracy and for the grace he displayed during the transition. In 1990, de Klerk made several announcements that accelerated the elimination of apartheid. He announced that Nelson Mandela would be released from prison, and de Klerk lifted the ban on many organizations, including the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party.

PROFILE
Mandela: leader among leaders Chief among African leaders, Nelson Mandela is one of few statesmen to have achieved almost universal respect around the world and across the political spectrum. His role in fighting apartheid, his imprisonment on Robben Island - where he came to symbolise the struggle of oppressed people around the world - and his ability to steer South Africa through the crisis of its re-birth, earned him the international reputation of benevolent negotiator and quintessential peacemaker. Imprisoned for 27 years for his opposition to apartheid, Mandela came out of prison in 1990 expressing no bitterness towards his tormentors. Instead, he championed reconciliation among South Africa’s polarised races, espousing the principles of nation-building and co-operative governance. Mandela was one of the few leaders cabable of inspiring confidence both inside and outside the country. Few others would have managed to unite the disparate warring parties and steer South Africa from what seemed to be the brink of civil war.
