Nikola Tesla
The Guglielmo Marconi Case
Who is the True Inventor of Radio? How many mistakes are there in our history books after all? How many facts are erroneously described and so replicated throughout the world, while the reality is completely different? The invention of radio is one of these cases. Despite the fact that almost every book mentions Guglielmo Marconi as the inventor of radio, the only thing Marconi did seems to be nothing more than reproducing apparati Nikola Tesla had registered years ago. Marconi copied Tesla, made some modifications, built a large industry producing radio devices in Europe and spent huge amounts to advertise his supposed invention. Yet, the inventor of radio is Nikola Tesla, as proved by official court decisions and as great scientists of his era admit. The Facts
Tesla carries his first experiments with high frequency electric currents. The first demonstration of wireless communication. In his articles and lectures Tesla describes his first radio apparatus in detail. Marconi presents a radio device in London, claiming it as his invention. However, the device is the same as what Tesla had already described in his articles. Later on, Marconi will claim that he had not read Tesla's articles, despite that they were translated in many languages very quickly.

Fisica (1909)

    Marconi, Guglielmo (1874-1937)
Italian physicist and Nobel prize winner who, for several years, became involved with the possibility of radio communication with extraterrestrial intelligence. His first public comments on the subject appeared on the front page of The New York Times on January 20, 1919, under the headline "Radio to Stars, Marconi's Hope." Marconi expressed his belief that there may be many inhabited worlds, that mathematics might serve as a common language of communication (see mathematics, as a universal language ), and that unexplained signals he had detected might have been sent by intelligent beings in space. A year later the Daily Mail in London reported that Marconi had found "very queer sounds and indications, which might come from somewhere outside the Earth," including Morse code. Subsequently, The New York Times followed up the story, stimulating comments from a number of scientists and engineers around the world. Although Marconi said nothing more on the subject, the possibility of radio communication with extraterrestrials created much public excitement at the coming close opposition of Mars in 1924. By this time, most professional astronomers agreed that there was little chance of finding advanced Martians. But one who had not yet given up hope of making contact with the inhabitants of the Red Planet was David P.

Guglielmo Marconi, inventor and electrical engineer

From mobile phones to missions to Mars, Marconi's wireless magic made it possible
    12 December 2001
"It was shortly after midday on December 12th 1901 that I placed the single ear phone to my ear and started listening. The receiver on the table in front of me was very crude with few coils, no valves, no amplifiers, not even a crystal!"
Those are the words of Italian inventor and electrical engineer Guglielmo Marconi. His receiver may have been crude but without it, modern technology as we enjoy it would not exist.
Marconi was awarded the Nobel prize in 1909

At 12.30 p.m. on that day, 100 years ago, in Saint John's, Newfoundland, Marconi's receiver picked up the first-ever wireless telegraph message to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The landmark communication - the three dots of the letter 's' in Morse code - had begun its journey from a 164 feet (50.5 m) high antenna mast that Marconi had erected 2,232 (3,571 km) miles away in Poldhu, Cornwall, England. Many experts had been convinced that the curvature of the Earth would prevent the transmission; the 27 year-old Marconi proved them wrong. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1909.

    12 Dicembre 2001

Although many scientists and inventors contributed to the invention of wireless telegraphy , including Ørsted Faraday Hertz Tesla ... Edison , and others, Marconi's was the first practical system to achieve widespread use, so he is often credited as the "father of radio". Feature: December 2001 A lack of formal education, high-powered family connections and an unstoppable will to succeed helped Guglielmo Marconi to transmit the first radio signal across the Atlantic and launch the wireless-communications industry.
    Mother's boy
There cannot be many people who screwed up at school, failed to get into university, and then went on to win a Nobel Prize for Physics. But at least one did, and with good reason: he made radio happen. In a few years of manic activity, Guglielmo Marconi managed to transform an obscure piece of maths into a social upheaval that makes the dot.com phenomenon look about as radical as a new bike for your postman. Marconi's 1909 Nobel prize seems all the more extraordinary when you consider that - unlike the physicist he shared it with, Ferdinand Braun - Marconi was not, by his own admission, any kind of scientist, or even much of an inventor. He did not really make any fundamental discoveries, and radio was mostly a matter of assembling parts created by other people. But the vision needed to see the possibilities of a new era of communication, and the unstoppable will to pursue it, were all his own. No intellectual, Marconi earned his Nobel prize the hard way by dragging a great chunk of physics out of the lab and holding it up for the world to see, approve and, more importantly, buy.

Classics Introduction to Marconi’s Nobel Lecture V Rajaraman It is now a century since the first transcontinental wireless transmission when Guglielmo Marconi received wireless signals across the Atlantic in December 1901. ... He shared the Nobel Prize with Karl Ferdinand Braun who modified Marconi’s wireless transmitters significantly to increase their range and usefulness. Wireless Telegraphic Communication Guglielmo Marconi The discoveries connected with the propagation of electric waves over long distances and the practical applications of telegraphy through space, which have gained for me the high honour of sharing the Nobel Prize for Physics, have been to a great extent the results of one another. The application of electric waves to the purposes of wireless telegraphic communication between distant parts of the earth, and the experiments which I have been fortunate enough to be able to carry out on a larger scale than is attainable in ordinary laboratories, have made it possible to investigate phenomena and note results often novel and unexpected. In my opinion many facts connected with the transmission of electric waves over great distances still await a satisfactory explanation, and I hope to be able in this lecture to refer to some observations, which appear to require the attention of physicists.
