The character of Guglielmo Marconi is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious in Italy's scientific landscape. As a matter of fact, he has given to Italy an international renown for which we will always be grateful. Italians also owe him eternal gratitude for the discovery that has radically changed the history of mankind.
The profile of the scientist Marconi is universally known and we need not spend any further comment, nor praise, specially considering those the Media have constantly given him tribute for. However, there is an aspect of his image that is less known, and yet it is not less important. We are thinking of his considerable organising capacities, which led him to be one of the first and happiest examples of scientist-entrepreneur.
He chaired the National Research Council from September 1st, 1927 up to his sudden death, on July 20th, 1937 and he strove with great energy with respect to the regime which he supported in order that the new body, which he considered `of the utmost importance for Italy's future', could effectively carry out a front-line role in the field of research. He knew perfectly well that it was unimaginable to abandon the scientists to themselves, only trusting to the `Italic genius', that is the extraordinary capacity of his fellow countrymen to obtain extremely valuable results even though working in difficult conditions. That is when he appealed to the regime and pronounced his harsh reprimand: `men are not enough, they need financial and instrumental means and this has already been provided for and will be improved on by the State and the very Nation, as its chief interest'.

La storia di un ragazzo eccezionale: Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937) Il 1995 è stato e il centenario invenzione della radio dovuta allo stesso Guglielmo Marconi. Lo scienziato nacque a Bologna, da Giuseppe e Annie Jameson, (irlandese di origine scozzese), il 25 Aprile 1874 Marconi scoprì allora, che la portata delle trasmissioni tanto più rapidamente aumentava quanto più si innalzava l'antenna dal suolo. A seguito della sua scoperta, partì per Londra dove avviò le pratiche per il brevetto della sua invenzione che fu presentata a William Preece l’ingegnere-capo e direttore generale del British Post Office, ricercatore egli stesso, che gli mise a disposizione i mezzi per esperimentare pubblicamente i suoi apparecchi. Nello stesso anno, Preece dichiarò in una storica conferenza, che "Marconi aveva ideato per primo un nuovo ed utilissimo mezzo di comunicazione tra le genti". Dopo alcuni esperimenti, Marconi fondò la "The Wireless Telegraph and signal Company Limited", diventata nel 1900, "Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company Limited"

All'età di vent'anni ebbe la grande intuizione di collocare un'antenna con cui mandare e ricevere le onde elettromagnetiche nello spazio. Nel 1895 si trasferì a Londra e qui riuscì a trasmettere un segnale al di là di una collina. L'anno seguente brevettò la sua scoperta. In pochi anni Marconi divenne famoso e nel 1909 ricevette il premio Nobel per la fisica. Marconi fu Presidente del Centro Nazionale delle Ricerche e dell'Accademia Reale dal 1927.
Description de la découverte Nel 1895 Guglielmo Marconi riesce a trasmettere segnali via radio fra due apparati distanti fra loro quasi due chilometri, nascosti l'uno all'altro da una collina. Nasce così un sistema di comunicazione senza fili, capace di superare ostacoli naturali o artificiali posti fra la stazione ricevente e quella trasmittente. Grazie a nuovi apparati e a nuovi studi quel sistema di comunicazione si affermerà rapidamente.

On December 12th, 1901, Guglielmo [gOOlyel'mO] Marconi, standing on Signal Hill, St. John's, Newfoundland, received the first transatlantic wireless signal. The signal, the letter "S" in Morse code, was transmitted from over 1800 miles away at Poldhu, Cornwall, England. In successfully completing the world's first transatlantic wireless transmission Marconi changed the world of communications forever. Marconi's historic achievement served as a catalyst for the age of wireless communication, without which cell phones would not exist! The following are facts about Marconi:
  • Marconi was born in Bologna, Italy on April 25th, 1874; he died on July 27th, 1937.
  • In order to receive the Morse code signal from England, Marconi had to get his 500 ft. wire antenna into the air. Several times Marconi attempted to do this with balloons, but he was unsuccessful. Finally, his antenna was lifted into the air with the aid of a kite.
  • The kite which Marconi used to hoist his antenna was based on a model designed by Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting movement.

April 25 ~  Humanity More Victorious Marconi My Beloved "Every day sees h u m a n i t y more victorious in the s t r u g g l e with space and time ~ Guglielmo Marconi The inventor of wireless telegraphy, Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937) was born on this day in Bologna, Italy and took an interest in physical and electrical science as a child. At age 20, he was inspired by an article that discussed the possibility of using Hertzian radio waves instead of telegraph wires to communicate "Long experience has taught me not always to believe in the limitations indicated by purely theoretical considerations," he once said. "These, as we well know, are based on insufficient knowledge of all the relevant factors." From the family attic workshop, the passionate young physicist immediately began experimenting with radio signals from one end of his house to the other. Soon he was sending and receiving electrical signals up to two miles away. Applying for a patent in 1896, Marconi allowed the British Navy to install his equipment in some vessels. By 1901, seven years after his first experiment, Marconi transmitted signals across the Atlantic Ocean, from Poldhu, England to St. John's Newfoundland. "It proved what I had known all along," said Marconi. "Radio could encompass the world!"

Biography of Guglielmo Marconi Marconi, Guglielmo . He was the originator of wireless telegraph signals and created means of overcoming many of the hurdles to the commercialization of wireless. He was the first to transmit signals across the ocean without use of cables. Marconi was born in the Italian countryside in somewhat modest circumstances. He had little formal education, though his mother tutored him, and he loved to read from his fathers library about experiments with electricity. Marconi audited courses at the University of Bologna, since he could not gain admittance to the university for credit, and studied under Augusto Righi, a scientist who had worked with electromagnetic waves. Since Righi was also a neighbor, Marconi would often visit him with questions and ideas. Righi rarely encouraged Marconi’s ideas about a practical system of transmitting information using these electromagnetic waves. Still, Marconi showed a dogged persistence in trying out method after method in his experiments. In 1895, at the age of 21 after following the experiments of Heinrich Hertz, Marconi devised a system that allowed him to ring a bell two rooms away in his attic workshop purely by striking a telegraph key that created electromagnetic waves. He began producing this effect at longer and longer distances, eventually moving outside and sending the signals several hundred yards.
