    88. 48th Meeting Of The Nobel Prize Winners In Lindau, 1998
Not the stereotypical nobel Prize laureate. Thursday morning were lectures by RudolphMarcus (Cal Tech), John Polanyi (University of Toronto), Michael Smith

th Meeting of the Nobel Prize Winners in Lindau, 1998 th Meeting of Prize Winners For Chemistry, June 29-July 3, 1998 Below are some recollections of the 5 days I spent in Lindau in early summer 1998, recreated from memories, notes and various The setting for the meeting was ideal. Lindau is a beautiful medieval town on a small island near the north east corner of Lake Constance. Lake Constance (der Bodensee) is bordered by Germany to the north, Switzerland to the south, and Austria to the east. On a clear day the Alps are clearly visible to the south of the lake. While the island of Lindau is small (about 1 kilometer long by a third of a kilometer wide), it is connected by a rail causeway and auto bridge to the mainland only 100 meters or so away. Our hotel was located about 5 kilometers inland of the island. Monday evening was a dinner and social evening for all the meeting participants. The laureates were scattered, one per table, throughout the meeting hall. Alas, we arrived too late to get a table with a laureate. Tuesday morning were talks by William Lipscomb (Harvard), Robert Huber (Munich), Herbert Brown (Purdue), and George Olah (USC). Quite a mix of enzymes, proteosomes, electron microscopy, better organic synthesis through borane chemistry, and solving global warming by recycling CO
